Backpack Project

Members of SI Barry and District were recently impressed by an inspiring talk by a representative of Mary Meals – a charity which provides a meal a day in a school in communities where poverty and hunger handicap children in gaining an education. However, in many poor countries children face many obstacles on their way to gaining an education. Schools usually have next to no resources and parents struggle to provide food for their children let alone school bags, clothes, pencils and notebooks. When members learned of the complementary Backpack Project, which invited anyone to donate gifts of these items packed into a school bag/backpack, they immediately saw a way in which they could help. Over the next few months, with the help of family and friends, they collected enough items to fill 40 backpacks.
