About our Club
There will be a very warm, friendly and supportive welcome offered to women who are interested in joining a lively and vibrant group.
This year’s President is Margaret Hammond. The club includes members from the law, education, health and business backgrounds.
Blackburn is the longest-standing Soroptimist club in the region, having been active for over 75 years. (The club celebrated its special anniversary in 2010)
Members work locally, nationally and internationally with the same values as the ladies who began Soroptimism way back in 1936, namely working mainly for the benefit of women and girls, tackling issues of concern and providing aid and support wherever possible.
Some of our actual work has changed. For example, we are not required to roll bandages for soldiers, which club members did in 1940, but Aquaboxes containing emergency supplies have been filled for distribution in war-torn or disaster areas of the world. In 1942 the club welcomed refugees from Liverpool, whereas today we support asylum seekers from as faraway as Africa, Afghanistan and India.
We also like to “do our bit” for the environment, having recently helped to clear Himalayan Balsam in the town’s Corporation Park.
This year our president, Margaret Hammond, has decided to support local charities suggested by club members, and the Universal Birth Registration Project through Plan UK.
The club is also committed to supporting our Friendship Link club, SI Bamenda in the Cameroon, with a clean water project.
If you share our ideals and are interested in joining us, you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome.
We meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month at Wilpshire Golf Club at 7.30.
