About our Club

Club members at the AGM April 2011
Soroptimist International of Bridgend was founded in 1947 and has been active in the community since that time. Recent activities have included raising substantial sums for numerous charities, giving continued support to a number of local voluntary and charitable organisations, sponsoring the education of two sisters in Cape Verde and raising awareness of local and international issues.
An example of a recent international project was the collection, packing and transportation of 65 boxes of sewing machines and materials to Hadramaut district of the Yemen to enable destitute women to learn to sew and produce garments for themselves and for sale at a new sewing centre built with the help of the charity Friends of Hadramaut.
The Club has Friendship links with Soroptimist clubs in Uusikaupunki, Finland, Courtenay, British Columbia, Williamsburg, USA and Taw and Torridge in North Devon. Our most recent link has been established with SI Karachi in Pakistan and the Club is supporting their project to educate girls beyond the free schooling age. (for further details see Friendship links page)
