A Soroptimist in New York – June 2015

Sue Biggs, our member and the Federation Programme Director for SIGBI recently visited New York and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

On her return Sue gave a talk to the Club members about the significance of CSW and why it is so important to women and girls worldwide.

CSW first met in February 1947 shortly after the founding of the UN and has convened ever since. It is the global policy making body dedicated exclusively to the promotion of gender equality and the advancement of women. Every year representatives of member states of the UN Economic and Social Council gather at the UN HQ in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and the advancement of women worldwide.

In 2015 the theme was Beijing +20, as it was exactly 20 years since the 4th World Conference on Women in 1995 held in Beijing.

In 1995 women’s organisations from around the world met in Beijing and decided upon 12 pillars for action which would lead to gender equality for women across the globe. It is important to note there is no country in the world which has achieved gender equality.
