Teasing the brain raises funds for the Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre
SI Cambridge recently held a fundraising quiz night in Hardwick. Eight teams with up to six members in each did battle with rounds varying from Science and nature to 12 November (questions associated with the date on which the quiz was held), and Food and drink to Cambridgeshire (not so easy!). During the interval we enjoyed a tasty ploughman’s supper while trying to identify Cambridge college timepieces, and unravel cryptic clues to London tube stations. The evening ended with a dead heat, the first two teams both scoring 80 points out of a possible 110, and a tiebreaker question was used to decide the winner.
The Fundraising Committee worked hard to ensure that the evening ran smoothly, and it was much enjoyed by all who attended. The profits raised (about £400) will go to the President’s charity, Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre.
Bridge the Gap 12 September 2010
A lovely September morning, interesting places to see and a pleasant walk with friends – what more could anyone ask.
Five members took part in this year’s 5-mile Bridge the Gap charity walk, one helping with registration and four walking. (There would have been another and a soroptimister but they had to withdraw).
We set off from Jesus Green in company with hundreds of others and soon met a hold-up as the path narrowed but after that the crowd spread out. The route took us along the river, through college grounds and gardens, including parts not normally open to the public, and along hidden paths. There is a lot more to college grounds than the well known formal courts. Even when walking through the centre of the City we came across passages we had never noticed before.
We went into some of the colleges and saw the architecture of others from unfamiliar angles. The highlights of the buildings for me were the (surprisingly small) Union Society debating chamber and the recently reopened Polar Museum at the Scott Polar Research Institute.
At the Union Society we were able to see other parts of the building as well as the debating chamber itself where so many eminent people have spoken, and spent some time looking at old group photographs and spotting well known politicians in their younger days. The Polar Museum is well worth another visit; we only had time for a quick look round.
Arriving back at Jesus Green the ‘walk completed’ sticker was put onto our programmes to join those added at checkpoints along the way.
We are grateful to all those who sponsored us as individuals and as the SI Team and enabled us to add to the sum raised for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and the Cambridge News Press Relief.
WaterAid brings out the Coffee Drinkers!
In August we held a coffee morning in aid of WaterAid at Dry Drayton. This was very well attended and supported by the villagers and club members. Over £300 was raised.
WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation.
WaterAid transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. We work with partners and influence decision-makers to maximise our impact.
