Soroptimists all over the world give service in many ways, and they do so throughout the year, but on a Saturday early in March, close to International Women’s Day, clubs worldwide give service in their own locality, to aid the community and also to raise awareness of the organisation and of the many people and charities they support.
This year Soroptimist Internationalof Cannock & District gave service in two ways. They chose to support Chase 3, Cannock traders and the Cannock community by promoting the town Lotto. 14 club members were present throughout the day in the Shopping Centre to tell the public about the Town Lottery: tickets are sold each month in many of the shops in the town, half of the money is given as prize money for the lucky winner, 5% of the money is used for administrative costs and 45% will be used to fund community events such as the Carnival and the Christmas Extravaganza in the town centre. The more successful the lottery becomes, the higher the prize money will be but, perhaps more importantly, even more events will be held to benefit the local community.
Over 100 March lottery tickets were sold at the promotional event with many people of Cannock showing a real interest in what the Cannock traders are trying to do. As many said “It’s important to do what we can for our town”. The tickets this month have been sponsored by Cannock Soroptimists, Cannock Rotary and Cannock Lions – the three service clubs are all supporting the Town lottery and will continue to work to help the community in whatever way they can.
SI Cannock President Ronnie Reynolds did the draw for the winner of the February lotto, the winning ticket number was 0802.
Soroptimists also had leaflets from some of the local organisations they support: SNAP, Pathway and Edward’s Trust.
In addition to this promotional day club members donated tinned food which will be taken to the Cannock Salvation Army for them to use in the many social activities they undertake.
