Soroptimist International comes to Tanzania

Posted: April 3, 2012

This was the banner created by SI Arusha, and proudly displayed high above the city streets on their Charter date of 20th March 2012.

Four years ago the seed of soroptimism was planted by Mrs Margaret Ndzelen, a SI member from Bamenda, Cameroon. While visiting with her daughter who had just given birth, Margaret wanted to attend a local Soroptimist Club meeting, but to her dismay SIGBI confirmed that there was no SI club in Tanzania.

‘SI is a wonderful initiative with the aim to empower the woman and educate the girl child. Tanzania would benefit from this” Maggi said. It is with this zeal that a group of women came together, and she introduced the idea of soroptimism to them. We received the idea and got to work at once.

It took four good years to eventually get the club registration and recognition by the Tanzanian government. Thanks to the steadfastness of the President and Secretary,  Mama  Praise Ngowi and Mama Anna Anatoli respectively (just to name a few), they kept the flame burning and finally the first ever SI club in Tanzania was chartered on  20 March 2012 by the SIGBI president- Maureen Maguire. They had a fundraising night at the Golden Rose Conference centre of Arusha, Tanzania and invited sponsors, on-lookers and patrons to grace the event.

To support the event and to give it a sense of purpose, President Maureen crowned our president Mrs Praise Ngowi with a beautiful silver chain. Our insignia is decorated with all the precious stones mined in Tanzania, including the most precious of them all, the tanzanite-. The 24 club members were subsequently presented with their SI badges . The ladies are proud to be called members of SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF ARUSHA TANZANIA -“SIAT”.

A member’s account

The SIGBI president arrived in Arusha on 19 March 2011. On that same day the we all went see our charter project,  then there was the SI club friendship evening. A visit to the arusha municipality , and sites comprising the second project (both projects are described in detail below) were also highlights of Maureen’s visit on the second day. The club members took this opportunity to show their auspicious guest one of the many touristic attractions in Tanzania, the snake park.  Before long the president’s stay was over and she was on her way to Nairobi for the All African Clubs Conference.

Happiness' House

Happiness

Our charter project is about a  lady we are proud to say we have advocated for her rights, we have empowered her to face the future and we above all have given her the basics every human would want; food, cloth and shelter. With our meager resources, we built Happiness a 3 bed room house.

On 20th of March 2011, we visited the second project which had to do with the children we have identified as abused children. We also visited the juvenile prison and the school some of the identified abused kids go to. It brought tears to a lot of the members present to see how the future of tomorrow is rotting away. Our present project in a nutshell is to sensitize the women and communities on what child abuse is about and how they can stop it, as well as to give as much assistance to the victims identified both legally and morally. Our aim this year is to improve on the education and leadership of our girls and women.

We visit the juvenile facility

We visit the school with abused children that we help

We train ourselves and a group of other women –lukundani group on child abuse

We have come a long way and hope to go a long way in friendship and love to be the global voice for women and the girl child. SIAT has come to stay and together we would change the future.

Soroptimist Received by Queen at Commonwealth Jubilee Celebration

Posted: March 17, 2012

International Programme Director Hilary Ratcliffe, and member of Soroptimist International Great Britain & Ireland (SIGBI), represented Soroptimist International at a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. This reception was held in celebration of Commonwealth Day (March 14th) and Her Majesty’s diamond jubilee.

Hilary reports back from an eventful evening, (plus a brief history lesson!):

“Pussy cat, pussy cat where have you been?

I`ve been to London to visit the Queen” *

Or so runs the nursery rhyme, written in the 16th Century for Queen Elizabeth I.

Well I am not exactly a pussy cat but I did go, on behalf of Soroptimist International (SI), to London to visit the Queen. Last Monday 14th was Commonwealth Day. It is a great day of celebration for all that the Commonwealth stands for. SI has Commonwealth member countries throughout all four Federations so it is right and proper that we get involved in these events.

We have been very active through the Commonwealth Foundation over the past 12 months as an affiliated Civil Society Organisation. Many Soroptimists will have read the news stories and reports from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Perth in November. SI was represented by Past President Margaret Lobo and SI South West Pacific Programme Director Robyn Cain. In March last year our SIHQ staff, President Alice and I attended a parliamentary event celebrating the 2011 theme ‘Women Agents of Change‘. We have also been to several meetings and consultations held for NGOs affiliated with the Commonwealth on the future of the Commonwealth and the role of NGOs. And exactly a year ago, SI President Alice attended the 2011 Commonwealth Day reception and also had the honour of meeting the Queen!

Given all the great work we have accomplished together this past year, in all Commonwealth countries, it was with great pride that I represented SI at the Commonwealth Day reception. It was held at Marlborough House in London. It is a magnificent building! Being a London Blue Badge tourist guide, I can tell you it was built originally by Sarah Churchill as her London home in the early 18th century. She and her husband, John Churchill, built Blenheim Palace near Oxford and she was for a time the great favorite of Queen Anne. She was also the ancestress of Diana, Princess of Wales. She was a feisty lady and perhaps would have made a good Soroptimist!

I was able to talk with several High Commissioners (ambassadors) from countries where we have members including Malawi, the Solomon Islands, St Vincent and the Grenadines, India and Bangladesh. I also met the High Commissioner from Belize and when I said we did not have Soroptimist clubs in her country she said we must have Soroptimists there! So a challenge for the future!

I was able to speak to the Queen and felt very privileged to represent us and make us known as a relevant and important organisation in a world forum.

Visit the website to see all the photos from the event.

* The story of the rhyme: One of the ladies in waiting of Queen Elizabeth Ist had a cat which roamed throughout her castle at Windsor. On one occasion the cat ran under the throne and startled the Queen. Luckily she found it funny and decreed that the cat could wander about the throne room, as long as s/he kept it free of mice!

Proposed club in Kathmandu make its mark

Posted: December 8, 2011

On 7th December 2011, members of the proposed new Soroptimist International Club of Kathmandu, Nepal, joined with other women’s organisations in a rally in support of Action against Gender Violence.

The rally started at 11 am local time and ended 2 pm local time. At the end of the rally, the gathering was addressed by different women right activists, including a spokeswoman from the proposed club of Kathmandu.

Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) are delighted that the club of Kathmandu is almost ready to be chartered, and we hope to welcome both this new club AND Nepal as a new Country into our Federation early in 2012.

More flood misery in Pakistan

Posted: December 2, 2011

This year has brought more misery with monsoon Floods in Sindh Pakistan. With many children still recovering from last year’s devastating floods, up to 2.5 million children in Sindh have now been affected by the severe monsoon rains and floods.

Please see the latest update on the SIGBI and UNICEF partnership project to provide aid to the victims of the floods in Pakistan.  A big thanks go to Soroptimists whose fundraising efforts have almost reached £26,000!
