International Night, took place on January 26th 2011 at Ringwood Hall Hotel.

President Simone Smith welcomed members and guests which included the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Cllr Keith Morgan and Mrs Pat Morgan and Alan Hepworth the guest speaker.

Candles were lit to represent the Friendship Links which exist between Soroptimist International of Chesterfield and clubs in Anguilla in the West Indies, Darmstadt and Mannheim in Germany and Roxborough in the USA. A candle for peace was also lit.

Following the meal, Alan Hepworth gave an interesting and entertaining account of his Argentinian Adventure. With the aid of slides he recalled his travels through Argentina staying with Rotarian families, these included an expedition into the Andes and to the Chilean border. His stay in Mendosa coincided with the wine Festival and he experienced the ceremony of choosing and crowning the ‘ Wine Queen’.

With the help of San Juan Rotary Club and other Rotarians, he and his late sister raised funds for the local hospital and were able to buy a scanner and other medical equipment.

The vote of thanks was given by Anne Thompson.

A raffle raised £120 which will be donated to the International Presidents ‘Education and Leadership’ project.

An evening to treasure

Members and guests recently enjoyed an evening with local Antiques Valuer and Auctioneer ,Vivienne Milburn. She gave an interesting account of her work and was able to value several members’ items. In addtional she organised a fun quiz to encourage the audience to try their hand at valuing items. Vivienne presented the winner with a book on antiques.

The evening was enjoyed by all and raised funds for Soroptimists charities.
