Bowls Season 2011

Crosby bowlers on finals day

At the end of another Soroptimist bowls season, members of SI Crosby can look back with mixed feelings. The club always takes part in the regional competition, which was founded by member Tricia Fahey when she was Regional President in the 1980s. Matches embody fun, friendship and excellent suppers – plus there’s always the hope of success.

The Crosby team beat SI Southport but lost to the St Helens, Ramsbottom and Liverpool clubs. As a result, the team did not reach the regional final. On finals day itself, hosted by SI St Helens, Liverpool once again triumphed and the club retained the President’s Rose Bowl. Crosby member Jenny Stanistreet – the President of South Lancashire Regional President Jenny Stanistreet presents team bowls trophyRegion – commended all players on an excellent competition, thanked regional co-ordinator Dot Massey and the host club, and presented the trophy.

Several Crosby players, however, had qualified to take part in the day’s individual knockout competition, for the season’s high-scoring nPresident Sandy presents 'Tricia' bowls trophyon-league players. This competition’s trophy is named in honour of Tricia Fahey. Once again Crosby’s Miriam Lucy reached the final but – in a keenly-played match – narrowly lost to Hildah McAllen of the Bootle club. SI Crosby’s President Sandy Taylor congratulated Hildah on her success and presented her with the “Tricia Trophy”.

“It has been an enjoyable season,” said Shirley Smith, Crosby’s bowls captain. “We have a mix of experienced players and novices – everyone has done their best in the practices and the matches. We’ll take part again next year and have the pleasure of meeting up with Soroptimists from all over the region.”
