On 10 November with friends, guests and Soroptimists from around the country – 90 of us in all – we lunched at The Clink Restaurant in HMP High Down based in Sutton.

Operated by The Clink Charity this facility offers prisoners the opportunity to gain skills which ultimately could lead to full-time employment within the hospitality industry.

After lunch, Governor Peter Dawson took time out to speak to us and answer many questions. Many of our guests have said that his talk was truly inspirational.

Our annual World Food Day lunch was once again held in Croydon College’s Chefs Restaurant on 13 October, when we welcomed representatives from local businesses and charities.

The event was formally opened by The Mayor and Mayoress of Croydon and our guest speaker was Evelyn Findlater, Founder and Director of Good Food Matters recently featured on BBC2 Newsnight.

This charity is dedicated to supporting disadvantaged children and young people to build healthier lifestyles. Evelyn has just secured £500,000 for a food garden and a food information project but her ultimate aim is to build a community food learning centre accessible to all includin wheelchair users and people with sight and hearing impairments.

Our sales table was a great success and raised £160.

The Membership Committee also took part both to raise awareness about the work of Soroptimist International and Croydon Club and to encourage women to join our organisation.

Cliff, a former detective superintendent with Kent Police, is a field researcher in criminology and a volunteer with the UK Human Trafficking Service which is part of the Serious Organised Crime Agency. He has provided presentations to Rotary and Soroptimist clubs with the aim of developing awareness and stimulating debate and pressure on National and International organisations charged with combating human trafficking.

Cliff has recently been involved with the setting up of the Kent Campaign Against Trafficking (KCAT) and so was delighted to meet our other guest, Peter Cox, Chair of the Croydon Community Against Trafficking (CCAT) which has been operating for over five years.
