The inhabitants of the island of Jersey are relaxed and easy-going, with every reason to be so in the sunshine of a June weekend when 3 club members attended the local Soroptimist club’s sixtieth anniversary. On Friday evening visitors were chauffeured to the grounds of Government House where the Governor welcomed all present to join him and his staff in celebrating and honouring the Queen’s official Birthday. And what a celebration! There were various marching foot soldiers carrying muskets, kilted bagpipers and gunners firing mortar salutes, all dressed in colourful 18th century uniforms. Following the Last Post, we made our way to a local parish hall, where we enjoyed an excellent buffet supper. Walking back in the dark through an unlit cemetery rounded off the evening’s entertainment!
On Saturday morning Pat Hanns, Maureen Lowry and Tracy Gardiner joined other Soroptimists, assembled in a local park for a photo shoot around a special floral display – one of the photos will surely end up in the magazine!
In the evening we travelled westward along the seafront to St Aubins Bay, where some one hundred and fifty of us enjoyed an evening meal in formal dress. There was music provided by a local duo, only occasionally drowned out by the vuvuzelas downstairs for the England game in the World Cup! As the sun set over the harbour, the celebrations were brought to a close.
