Nimble knitters net hundreds of pounds for local charities

Gravesend Club sold out of its glamorous, eye-catching scarves, necklets and stoles knitted by members and friends when they displayed their wares at the Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland Conference in Brighton (www.sigbi.org/brighton2011) in October.

Pictured on the stall is Valerie Boswell, President Elect. Knitting resumed after Conference to fulfill orders for Christmas.

Proceeds of approximately £1,000 will be divided between the local EllenorLions Hospices’ “Means to an end” Appeal and a project to help improve the quality of stay in hospital of patients suffering from dementia.

Silver posy raises funds for UNICEF

A miniature objet d’art of hallmarked silver and gilt buttercups in a glass vase, which was the prize in a Grand Draw organised by the Club, raised £646 for the SIGBI/UNICEF Soroptimists for Pakistan Appeal. The posy was donated by Stephen Randall, a professional silversmith and son of a Gravesend member.

The winning ticket, which was bought at the Brighton Conference by Mrs Patricia Caulton, Secretary of SI Gosport & Fareham, was drawn by Hilary Rowberry, President of South East England Region at a region meeting in Maidstone on 26 November 2011.
