Programme Action

The Hull branch has, over the years, campaigned against the use of landmines, the cruelties of child trafficking (an ongoing plight) and the impact of war on women.

The club has advertised for unused materials, knitting and sewing equipment to help women in Romania and Sierra Leone start small businesses, thus support their families. At that time we were so overwhelmed by the local public response that we had to borrow a warehouse to sort it all out.

We have also sponsored children in Africa and have tried to keep open links with African projects.

Our members also give time to many voluntary organisations and projects using their personal skills or promoting personal interests.

Whilst we are not, at our core, a fundraising society, we recognise the value of money and the supply of other resources in making changes for the better and we have donated money to a range of causes:

• Humberside Conciliation Service
• Home Start
• Cystic Fibrosis
• Hull Diabetic Centre
• Wildlife Trust Fund
• Medical Chest Research Fund
• DERMA (research on skin cancer)
• Uganda appeal
• Age Concern
• Breast Cancer
• Child Contact Centre
• Compassionate Friends
• Shop mobility
• Victim Support
• Alzheimer’s Society
• KIDS
• Fredrick Holmes School Fund
• Mc Millian Nurse Appeal
• Hull & East Yorkshire Council for Drug Problems
• International Rescue Corps

More recently we have provided the local police with bags of immediate necessities for rape victims. The bags contain toiletries, underwear, T-shirts etc and are given to a victim at the police station to help them feel more comfortable at a very difficult time.

Local agendas may be identified as a particular interest of the President of the year or as a result of a member’s proposal for action. This year our President Alex Henderson has chosen Home Start and Help for Heroes. In addition we are currently promoting the collection of shoes (of any age and condition) which are recycled to raise money for the Air Ambulance Service.
