International Projects

Current project: MCAI. Maternal & Childhealth Advocacy International. Provides training for midwives, and hospital facilities for pregnant women in Africa.

Past projects

Malika

Malika: The club supported the education of a young girl in India by providing funds to pay for her school fees, books and uniform.

One of our members has a brother living in Calcutta and arranged for money to be sent to the club via him – this avoided bank charges for sending money to India. We received regular reports of Malika’s schoolwork,
and copies of expense accounts. She has now completed her education.

Toilet blocks: Over a two year period the club raised funds to enable the Calcutta Club build a toilet block in a girls school. Because of the lack of sanitary facilities girls were not attending school. The new block has now made it possible for them to attend lessons.  In 2010 the club was nominated for an award for this project.

Classical concert

Nottingham and Leicester clubs joined us in organising a concert at De Montfort Hall in Leicester. The Bardi Orchestra and an Italian Soroptimist playing a Mozart piano concerto helped raise over £2000 for the project SIAM. This project provided work opportunities for young girls in Thailand to prevent them being sold into the sex trade.

Colin Dexter & Morse. Loughborough and Leicester clubs, in conjuction with the local Waterstones bookshop, invited Colin Dexter to give his talk ‘Morse and Me’ and sign his new book, raising over £500 for the project Landmines. This project provided prosthetic limbs for those disabled by landmines.
