The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) have sent a letter of thanks to SIGBI for the £5,000 donation, which includes an update on the situation:

Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) has donated £5,000 to the Disasters Emergency Committee towards the East Africa Food Crisis appeal.

The UK Government will match-fund the first £5 Million donated by the public to this appeal.

Twenty-million people, including millions of children, across South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia are at risk of starvation as a result of the drought.  According to the Disasters Emergency Committee, £100 could provide supplies to a clinic treating severely malnourished children for a week. As well as the immediate risk to life, there are other issues for example children not going to school because they are too hungry and weak to attend.  This situation needs to be brought under control as soon as possible, and the only way is for relief agencies to provide food to all communities.
