Masooma Ranalvi, a survivor of FGM was spearheading the call for its ban and sought the government to step in . Her petition which was posted on sigbi.org was a huge success and the matter has moved to the government. Masoonma sent the following email:

Dear All,

On behalf of Speak Out On FGM India, i would like to share some good news with you.

As you are aware we have been campaigning long and hard for the last 4 years to end FGM in the Bohra community in India.

We tasted the first scent of victory when the Government Of India through its Minister of Women and Child Development, made a public statement in the media, acknowledging our demands and stating categorically that FGM is an offence in India as per the Indian Penal Code and The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act of 2012.

This pronouncement is huge specially because the religious leader of the Bohras has publicly proclaimed that Bohras will obey the laws of the land as ordained by Islam. In keeping with this proclamation we Speak Out On FGM will appeal to the Bohras and the Syedna to obey the laws in India and end FGM here.

Speak Out on FGM is also intervening in a Public Interest case filed in the Supreme Court of India on this issue.

While the battle lines are drawn and we will face a huge opposition from the community, but we are up to face it.

We are very thankful for the tremendous support, inspiration and encouragement we have received from all of you to take our movement to this stage. We hope you will continue to stand with us in this struggle.

Hope victory will be ours.
Warm Regards
