Joanna Skarin is a personal stylist and advises on all things fashion and personal presntation. She brought a number of beautiful coloured scarves to show how tone and shade make a match to a person and also a personality. There is no right or wrong in this and it was intersting to note how colours change as one ages. We had a good range of skin tones/hair colur/eye colur and clothing to make for an entertaining evening. Joanna identified certain aspects among the club members and it all made sense when she started talking about colours close to the face and accentuating certain areas to detract from others. Matching the size of clothes is an important factor, wearing what fits as well as what suits helps benefit the appearance.

She took us thorugh her life as she developed towards heping and caring at a young age. She enjoyed being involved with children and in her teens helped many youngsters at camps and similar. From University she enjoyed her ecumenical studies and met a woman who changed her life. Life can often be like this, a sudden meeting or moment when everything falls into place. This happened with Sarah and she went forward into the church.

This year President Janet invited club members to her home for a lunch, followed by Boules on the lawn.

Members brought food and as the weather was good to us, we spent a lovely afternoon together. Ready for the autumn session of meetings beginning on 1 September.

It is located in the Old Chapel at Greenham, itself a prominent memory in recent history given the women (and others) who demonstrated against cruise missiles in the 80s at Greenham common.

The Archive maintains a documentary and photographic record of textiles located in the community throughout the United Kingdom. The archive is used for research, and helps raise the profile and esteem of textiles housed in public, or semi-public places, and those owned by community groups or associations. The NNA is highlighting the historical, sociological and design value of this vast resource of textile art.

SI Newbury paid an evening visit in July as the President’s evening and President Janet is pictured outside the location at a later date. No photography is allowed indoors.

SI Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Races & Lunches took place on Tues. 16 February 2010.

Sixteen teams of four, some in fancy dress, battled it out in the Market Place, Newbury frantically tossing their pancakes, cheered on by hundreds of very enthusiastic spectators.

The coveted title of Newbury Pancake Champions 2010 was won by the Newbury Weekly News’ team. Newbury Young People’s Council, dressed as Teletubbies, won the Best Dressed Team title. Richard Jennings of BACYP (Berkshire Association of Clubs for Young People) dressed as Mario of Mario Bros. was thrilled to win the title of Pancake Tosser of the Year!

After the races, children from a local nursery school participated in the re-enactment of catching pancakes thrown from St. Nicolas Church Tower. These pancakes were originally for the poor of the town and the practice was discontinued in 1924, but reinstated by the Newbury SI club in 2006. This was followed by members from the race teams vying to catch the Golden Pancake.

Delicious pancakes, 420 of them cooked solely by SI member Sylvia Grimwood with fillings made by her band of SI helpers, were served in St. Nicolas Church Hall.

A very exciting and exhausting day was thoroughly enjoyed by both participants and the organizers.

This year’s President’s nominated charity – Stroke Care for Newbury & West Berkshire will benefit from the monies raised, which totalled approximately £900.
