About Our Club

Newcastle and District Club was formed in 1964 with The Charter Dinner held in the Sutherland Suite at Trentham Gardens on 25th September and we celebrated our 45th Anniversary in 2009 with a service of thanksgiving at St Thomas’s Church in The Woods, Butterton, Newcastle.  As we are now in our 50th year it is now a year of celebrations!

Soroptimists are women with a social conscience who want to make a difference by giving service, sharing friendship and having fun. We hold our Business Meetings at Newcastle Community Fire Station and our speaker meetings with a meal at the Borough Arms Hotel, Newcastle, to which visitors are welcome.

Our President chooses the charities that she wishes to support.  We give an annual achievement award to a student at The Coppice Special School.  We undertake our fund raising in many ways, but we all enjoy it together with the friendship and fellowship that we have, being members of this wonderful organisation.

The Club has had a very busy year raising money for local and international projects and helping with service and support in the local community. Over the past 2 years St Mary’s Primary School have been supported by several members of our group with a literacy project.  We have continued to support “Contact the Elderly” whereby we provide transport to and host Sunday Tea for local elderly residents.  Internationally we have supported projects in the Gambia alongside the children of Clough Hall Technology College.  We are continuing this support with the charity, Friends of the Gambia.

We have over the last few years supported the Purple Teardrop Campaign which supports victims of sex-trafficking, by circulating and obtaining signatures to a petition. (www.purple teardrop.org.uk)

Over the past ten years, we as a club have raised and donated over £33000, which included local and overseas work.

Internationally SIGBI raised £106,000 from 2011-2013 supporting the BIG project, we were pleased to contribute and look forward to our forthcoming project See Solar, Cook Solar, helping families to provide power for cooking and light to see and study by.
