SI BARROW IN FURNESS
On March 8 members of SI I Barrow in Furness met on Walney Bridge, holding banners and placards to celebrate IWD. They were joined by the Mayor of Barrow. The Evening mail took photos.
SI BLACKPOOL
4 members from SI Blackpool & District were please to support the Purple Teardrop Campaign by attending a performance of the newly composed opera Anya 17, which was inspired by true stories of trafficking victims. The opera performed at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, was well received by an enthusiastic audience
S I GRANGE OVER SANDS
S I Grange over Sands planned a couple of events for IWD. We put up a display in the library featuring three local women who have made a real difference to the community and also
held a bridge event on Grange promenade. We wrote to various organisations in the town asking if any of their members would like to join us. We put up posters explaining what the event was about, spoke to people, and gave small bunches of daffodils to any women we saw. That was the most rewarding part of the morning. The genuine delight of those receiving theflowers was heart-warming. We had to stop people giving us donations – the flowers were a gift. So I’m sure that some women and men will remember what IWD is about next March.
We also took the opportunity to distribute information about Ovarian Cancer awareness.
S I LANCASTER
SI Lancaster held a Jacob’s Join and Social Evening on Monday 5 March attended by members of SI Lancaster and members of East meets West held in the Quaker Meeting House. East meets West is an organisation for women of faith and is well attended by women from the local Asian community. The food for the Jacob’s Join was a delicious mixture of western and Asian culinary delights. Following supper there was a flower demonstration to show how attractive flowers from the supermarket can be displayed. The Asian women brought their children to the event and they were entertained by doing some art work. It was a very happy evening.
SI MORECAMBE AND HEYSHAM
The Bridge of Knowledge
SI Morecambe and Heysham celebrated International Women’s Day by building a bridge of awareness of the dangers of Ovarian Cancer by handing out leaflets and talking to women in Morecambe, highlighting the ‘silent killer’ aspect of the disease.
We gathered at the Eric Morecambe statue where we used archery equipment to underline that we need to target the dangers of this disease specifically at women. We also distributed leaflets about our organisation to raise awareness of our unique role in advancing the status of women and girls worldwide. We spoke to over 50 women, the majority of whom were interested in our what we were doing and supportive of our efforts.
S I THE FYLDE
Soroptimists from the Fylde Club were delighted to welcome keynote speakers, Juliet Lyon CBE of the Prison Reform Trust and Clive Chatterton, former Governor of the notorious Styal women’s prison in Cheshire, to their annual Conference on 7 March to celebrate the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day. They were joined by Rheagan Hendry of the Denise Hendry Foundation along with members of Fylde Coast Women’s Aid, Park View 4U and the National Association of Child Contact Centres who also spoke at the event.
Delegates enjoyed talks on a wide variety of subjects about women’s issues including medical negligence, justice for women, natural beauty, community projects, domestic violence and to lighten the tone were also introduced to the delights of Zumba – hosted by local experts Sue and Jackie – and techniques of self-defence from Jayne Emmington and Mick Mercer of Shudokan Aikido in Preston.
There was the opportunity to speak to representatives of charities and businesses who had stands at the event and delegates were also able to shop at the wonderful array of stalls with a mix of jewellery, l recycled gifts, cupcake candles and beautiful cards. Delegates sampled the moreish Fair Trade chocolate but left enough room for a substantial buffet lunch.
The Fylde Club were extremely grateful to local solicitors, Linder Myers, who sponsored the event along with a number of anonymous benefactors.
On 8 March the Fylde Soroptimists and friends met Mayoress, Karen Henshaw, on the bridge at the Ornamental Gardens on South Promenade, St Annes. Soroptimists worldwide meet on bridges on this day to celebrate International Women’s Day and mark the occasion by highlighting the positive work done by women worldwide to help other women in less fortunate situations
