“Waste Not Want Not”
In the “Stand Up against Poverty” actions extending over the weekend of October 17-19 October, Soroptimist International Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District thought of a time when they had been “without” food and decided to investigate food rationing during the war years. On Monday 13 October members were led through the facts and figures of a week’s supply of rations; dried milk and eggs, the quantities of margarine, butter and sugar for a family for a week, as well as the companies who have survived that era. Members then tasted some of the war time recipes and were surprised how flavoursome they were. Spam and egg pie, potato cakes, egg less fruit cake, honey cakes were all on the menu. One member recounted her mother remarking that “If you have rice, eggs and potatoes, you can make anything!” However, members were left with a challenge! Can anyone produce marzipan without almonds?
