SI Best Practice awards are the highest award that a Club can receive for one of their projects, as the best projects are chosen from all the Clubs throughout the International Organisation.

Soroptimist International awards Best Practice awards for projects which fall under the organisation’s objectives. Our project ‘Women into Work- getting that job’ won the award under Objective 10: Assure women’s advancement in management, politics and decision-making.

This project began with club members working in their local comprehensive school setting up mock career interviews, to help prepare students for job and college interviews and to give them more confidence and improve interview skills. In this last year Nottingham members have been working in the local Women’s centre organising courses to enable participants to have the background material and information, along with practical help, to write a CV, construct a covering letter, complete an application form and to participate in a mock interview. This has enabled women who have been long out of work, or indeed may not have worked before to confidently enter or return to the work place. This project empowers, enthuses, encourages and enables women into work.

On 8th March 2011, over 100 women including Midland East Region President Jasmit and Soroptimists from Nottingham and throughout the region congregated at Trent Bridge in Nottingham to celebrate the anniversary and to spread the message of peace and an end to violence against women.

At one point, there were 120 women on the Bridge. We were joined by Mothers’ Union, Nottingham Women’s Register, Derby WI, a group of young feminists and various representatives from churches and friends.

We were also joined by Melanie Jeffs who is coordinator of Women’s Voluntary Action Network and initiator of the 100 women of substance project.

Barbara McDonald, Co-ordinator ofthis event for SI Nottingham says “International Women’s Day is important for us, as we are a global organisation giving service locally, nationally and internationally to improve the lives of women and girls.”

In London, members of Soroptimist International joined Women for Women International’s “Join Me On The Bridge Campaign” www.womenforwomen.org/bridge with Annie Lennox on the Millennium Bridge. More bridge events took place all over the UK and the world.
