The BIG Project

The BIG Project has now ended.  Over the past three years, SIGBI Members have raised £160,633.  A big THANK YOU to all our members for their extraordinary generosity.  All the money raised will transfer the lives of women and girls in The Gambia.

We have received the following note of thanks from MCAI (Maternal and Childheath Advocacy International):

We would like to thank all SIGBI Clubs for all their help and support, and congratulate you on the tremendous success of the BIG Project, which is saving and improving the lives of pregnant women and girls and their babies in The Gambia.”

If Clubs wish to continue to support MCAI in their work in The Gambia, independently of SIGBI, then you can use their donation form below:

Project Achievements

  • The ultrasound scanner purchased by SI Winchester and District in memory of Margaret Lovall

Brikama Hospital serves a population of 250,000 and each month, around 600 women give birth there.  The new 10-bedded labour ward extension is now complete and equipped, providing a safe environment for women to give birth.

  • Around 1400 women deliver every year at Essau Hospital, which is separated from Brikama by a 7 mile estuary.   Using local workers and materials, the refurbishment of the maternity unit has been completed.
  • An Ultrasound Scanner has been installed in the unit at Brikama, thanks to the memorial fund for Margaret Lovell, a late member of SI Winchester and District.
  • A vital supply of emergency drugs to enable these units to function has also been supplied.
