About our Club
Soroptimist Inernational of Penrith and District Club is situated in the peaceful Eden Valley on the edge of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. The area covered by Club is quite extensive and, apart from Penrith itself, is mainly rural countryside. The Presidential Chain of Office includes a picture of the Beacon which sits above the town on the appropriately named Beacon Hill (see photo below). This Beacon is a symbol of the light that we, as Soroptimists, hope to spread by our service and friendship.
SI Penrith and District is a thriving club of thirty four business and professional women. We try to live up to the name of Soroptimist which means literally, in Latin, “best of sisters” but can be loosely transcribed as “women working for women”. We try to make a difference in Penrith and the surrounding area by offering service and raising money for various projects.
Our mission statement covers the areas of Health and Education as well as Justice and Peace, particularly in relation to women and children. Soroptimists have always been at the forefront in caring for the environment by encouraging recycling and looking after the biodiversity of the beautiful area in which we are situated.
International goodwill and understanding through friendship is also one of our priorities and members meet together to discuss, plan and work on projects in this area.
This year the Club is celebrating fifty one years since incorporation and in that time it has been involved in many activites in the local, regional, national and international areas of service.
Over recent years we have taken an active interest in The Calvert Trust and, along with our sister club at Cockermouth, have a team assisting with preparing the centre for new residents during the summer weeks.
Another project, which enables us to make a difference, is getting together, informally, with a small group of Polish mums to help them gain confidence with the English language and assist with any communication difficulties they may be experiencing in Penrith. This ties in very well with our Friendship Link with Zabrze,a town in Poland. Soroptimist members from Poland visit us and vice versa.
We also have links with Voss in Norway, and Dhaka in Bangladesh. Again members from Penrith have visited each of these Clubs and we have helped support a literacy project in Dhaka for over 25 years by giving the Club there financial support.
Each year the Club selects a charity and this time our fundraising efforts are for the local Parkinsons association.
Nationally, we promote Fairtrade goods and have representatives on the Eden Fairtrade Network.
Internationally, Soroptimist International is representated at the United Nations and we celebrate many of the UN offical days. In September this year we intend to hold a Peace Service to celebrate UN International Day of Peace.
Our meetings take place twice a month and include speakers on various topics. In addition social and fundraising events take place during the year.
We welcome new members.
