Swimming Team Raises £688

After swimming 39 laps the team consisting of Simon Bartlett, Pauline Monk, Penny Bartlett, Jane Molyneux, Pat Parker and Jo Maidment raised £688 towards Purple Teardrop Campaign and Lions Charities. Our non swimming captain, Sheila Wilson, did a stirling job of counting the number of laps we swam and encouraging us on to reach our goal.

Soroptimists Raise nearly £400

Poole Soroptimists were delighted to work with Poole Rotarians whose Christmas Train delighted children and adults alike throughout the town in the weeks running up to Christmas. Soroptimist International Poole give their sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to their fund-raising which totalled just under £400. All proceeds support charities nominated by the Club President and a variety of Soroptimist supported projects.

Poole Soroptimists celebrated Christmas together with a delicious supper at the home of one of their members. This was followed by some serious bidding for ‘secret Santa’ gifts and a fun ‘Dr Who?’ quiz, raising over £100 for this year’s International President’s Appeal.

Broadstone Players Biting the Bullet

On Thursday 17 November 2011, in conjunction with the Broadstone Players, we enjoyed a fund raising Night at the Theatre. Broadstone Players performed ‘Biting the Bullet’, a poignant, very funny and uplifting play by Frank Vickery. Guests enjoyed a pre-drinks reception before taking their seats for the play, which everyone enjoyed enormously. After the curtain came down, there was an opportunity to meet the cast and director. It was very interesting to talk to the actors about the roles they had played and also to meet them as ‘real’ people!

Eighty people came to the evening after which Broadstone Players donated a magnificent £400 to SI Poole’s charity fund with additional monies being raised from a raffle.

There was a large display on SI Poole and on the Purple Teardrop Campaign, one of President Carol’s nominated charities. We also sold Purple Teardrop pin badges, and greetings cards created by the late Joan Blencowe, who had donated them to raise funds for the Purple Teardrop Campaign.

Broadstone Players have decided to offer the Thursday night performance of each of their full-length plays to a charity and Poole Soroptimists were delighted to be the beneficiary of the first of these events.

President Carol Thomas laid a wreath on behalf of Poole Soroptimists at the Remembrance Sunday service at the War Memorial in Poole Park on Sunday 13 November.

Coffee Morning Raises £225

Poole Soroptimists Mary and Judy held a successful coffee morning on 13 August much enjoyed by friends and Soroptimists alike. Coffees, stalls and a raffle raised a very welcome £225 for the club’s charity fund.

Poole Soroptimists Race and Raise £600

Four members of Soroptimist International Poole took part in the Race for Life in Poole Park on Sunday 27 June. All enjoyed the great atmosphere of the event where thousands of women walked, jogged and ran to raise funds for Cancer Research. With £600 raised between them, our team enjoyed the brisk 5km circuit from Poole Park to Whitecliffe harbourside and returning to Poole Park to the cheers of supporters and well wishers.

Poole Soroptimists were delighted to welcome representatives from 3 local charities to their June meeting at the Salterns Hotel.
Representatives from Chesthelp, Poole Christmas Parcels and the Infectious Academy, Turlin Moor, were presented with donations by Anne Ansell, Southern Region President.
Members were delighted to learn how the funds would be used by each of the charities, all of which provide invaluable support to members of the community in Dorset.

Afternoon Teas Raise over £600

Poole Soroptimists and friends ran a highly successful afternoon teas event at Wimborne St Giles Village Hall on 15 May.

Visitors were met with a wonderful array of home-made cakes, scones, sandwiches and traybakes in the delightful setting of this pretty Dorset village.

More than £600 was raised, including books and home-made jams, a welcome addition to the President’s charity fund for Bournemouth Leukemia Research, Girl Guiding and the Purple Teardrop Campaign.

Poole Soroptimists Welcome Out of Afrika

Poole Soroptimists were delighted to welcome Julie Martin and Desmond Nganga from the Broadstone based charity Out of Afrika. Julie and Des took members through the development of the International Centre of Technology in Thika, Kenya which provides an inspirational learning environment for its students in a wide range of courses from computing to business and even disaster management. Their presentation included images of the college right from the start of the project through to up to the minute pictures of the college’s facilities and grounds.

Soroptimist International Poole has sponsored students for a number of years through the Out of Afrika sponsorship programme – the most recent sponsored student has recently won a place at university.

The evening included a fund-raiser for the New Zealand Soroptimists’ Earthquake Appeal.
