Silent Auction

Poole Soroptimists’ popular Silent Auction event was held at the Hamworthy Club on 21 March. Guests bid on paper for the huge variety of items up for auction, raising over £500 for the President’s charity fund.

As part of its 60th Anniversary celebrations, Soroptimist International of Poole was delighted to sponsor the 2012 Langtry Manor Home Based Business Woman category of the Dorset Business Women awards.

At a glittering awards ceremony on 17 May, the Dorset Home Based Business Woman winner was announced – Jenny Langridge of Clevercow Cakes. To see Jenny’s range of amazing cakes, take a peek at her website.

Presidents Helen Kanolik and Kate Dukes were delighted to present Jenny with her award and commented. “There was a high quality entry for the Home Based Business Woman Award and it was very difficult to choose a winner but Jenny’s enthusiasm and personality really shone through. She considers the Award a recognition of how, despite many challenges, she has successfully managed to bring together being both a mum and a businesswoman. The Presentation Dinner was an excellent finale to the Awards process with so many inspiring and hardworking women coming together to celebrate their achievements.”

Dorset ARC Garden

Poole Soroptimists committed their support for the Dorset ARC (Assault Referral Centre) right from the outset of the project and were therefore very pleased to be able to transform the new centre’s garden area by fund-raising for plants and providing a team to pull up the weeds and plant out the new shrubs.

Everyone’s hard work has resulted in a peaceful, attractive courtyard area for the people who use the centre.

Afternoon Teas Fund Raiser

Poole Soroptimists and friends provided and served afternoon teas to visitors at Wimborne St Giles village hall on 20 March. Guests enjoyed home-made sandwiches, cakes, scones and tray-bakes in the pretty village hall and garden in the heart of the Dorset countryside. This popular event raised £650 for the club’s charities fund.

Walk4Water Raises over £300

Poole Soroptimist Liz Rodgers and her son took part in the 2012 Dorset WaterAid’s Walk4Water on Sunday, 13 March. The 6 mile walk started at Shell Bay, took in Studland village and Ballard Down, and finished in Swanage. This stunningly beautiful stretch of Dorset coastline makes for a perfect sponsored walk route. Liz and Christopher’s 6 mile stint raised over £300 for WaterAid’s work taking clean water and sanitation to communities throughout the world.

‘Purple Perils’ named the Business Brains of Poole 2012

Paul Kinvig presents the ‘Purple Perils’ with the winner’s trophy!

The ‘Purple Perils’ team recently won the title of Business Brains of Poole 2012 when they triumphed at Bournemouth Churches Housing Association’s quiz night.

The winning team was made up of members of the Purple Teardrop Campaign and Soroptimist International Poole. The event proved a huge success, with over 10 teams from the Dorset business community fiercely fighting it out for the title. Over £1100 was raised to help BCHA make a real difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable members of the local community.

Lorna Trent, BCHA Fundraising Manager, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the first ever Business Brains of Poole and helped make the event such a success. Everyone had a great time and the event was the perfect mix of fun and friendly team rivalry. Our thanks go to the Harbour Heights Hotel for donating a fantastic venue and drinks reception, to Quiz Master, Paul Kinvig, who kindly donated his time to BCHA, and kept everyone entertained throughout the evening, and finally to Cross Networking and Prince Croft Willis who each sponsored a round. ”

2012 Glitz and Glamour

The second annual Glitz and Glamour fashion evening fund-raiser took place at the end of March in support of WaterAid. This well supported evening raised over £800 profit and thanks must go to members Chrissi Kenton and Mar Godfrey and all the students from Bournemouth and Poole College who put on such a great event.

The clothes collection was from Dees Fashions of Westbourne, Bournemouth and other Westbourne retailers had stalls and stands for guests to visit and browse.

2012 Poole Lions Swimarathon Presentation

On Monday 19th March 2012 Poole Lions Club held their annual presentation of cups and awards to swimming teams and charities benefiting from the funds raised from the annual Swimarathon. SI Poole, whose members helped organise and run the event, chose the Purple Teardrop Campaign as their nominated charity. Alexandra Wiggins, chairman of the Purple Teardrop Campaign, was presented with a cheque for £3,200 from the Mayor of Poole, Councillor Graham Wilson.
