Mary’s Meals

Mary’s Meals is a global charity which sets up school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities where hunger and poverty stop children from gaining an education. The premise, to provide a daily meal in a place of education, is a simple but effective one. Chronically poor children are thus attracted into the classroom to be educated so they can climb the ladder out of poverty.

Although Mary’s Meals provides children with a daily meal, poor families often cannot buy the basic requirements for attending school such as stationery and even suitable clothing. The charity, therefore, decided to ask individuals and groups to fill backpacks with pencils, notepads, crayons, erasers, rulers and clothes. These are then transported to projects in Liberia, Malawi, Haiti, Uganda and Kenya.

Over the last 5 years or more, SI Southport members have enjoyed their involvement with Mary’s Meals, by raising money and by collecting items for the backpacks. The backpack filling sessions are an opportunity to provide service, fellowship and lots of fun.
