Purple Teardrop Campaign:

Thank you for everyone who supported the Campaign Day in the Market House on Saturday 15th October.  It was indeed a good day for the Club and very successful for our campaign.  We were all clad in purple with our teardrop badges, and we certainly made an impact on St. Austell town.  13 members attended. Our ‘purple ladies’ were out and about through the town, raising the awareness of human trafficking and filling up sheets and sheets of signatures.   The day was well advertised in the local press, also Kay/Jill T., spoke on Radio Cornwall and Kay/Ann T., advertised our campaign day on St. Austell Bay Radio.  Also posters were splashed around the locality. The Market House did us proud .  Jill did a risk assessment and we set up our publicity stall with display boards, a cage for our ‘sex slave’, human trafficking leaflets, teardrops, purple balloons and bespoke purple tee-shirts. It made a great impact. Our guest speaker, Rev. Steve Wild, was an inspiration.  He brought along with him an original child’s slave bracelet, which really did put everything into context.

Friday 28th October 2011, SI St. Austell handed over our petitions to the PTC stand at Conference with a total of 619 signatures.  (SI Poole hoped that each Club would supply 400!)  This does not include on-line petitioners, and forms sent to SI Poole independently.  The campaign finishes at the end of November 2011.    Again, to everyone that helped with this campaign a very big thank you!  Not all UK Clubs took up this campaign, but I feel that by raising the awareness of human trafficking in our local area can only do good and again, shows the dedication and purpose of St. Austell Soroptimists.   Let’s hope this nationwide campaign turns out to be a resounding success and impacts on our government, to make the necessary changes in legislation, which will, in time, recognize and help the women and girls affected by human trafficking.
