Hundreds of events occur, not just on this day but throughout March to mark their successes. St Helens Soroptimist club are seen planting a tree to celebrate the 100 years.

This beautiful tree (ACER PALMATUM OSAKAZUKI ) is planted in the lawn at the St Helens Crematorium. Thanks to the Bereavement Society and  St Helens Parks Maintenance. For further information about International Womens Day visit  www.internationalwomensday

JANE DEARDEN Chairperson CARERS UK. Vice Chair CROSSROADS UK - £1000

Jane is a proud Dept Lieutenant of Merseyside and in recognition for her tireless work for Carers UK she has just been awarded an M.B.E. by Prince Charles.  Plans for this money to go into the Hardship Fund facilitated by Councillor Betty Lowe’s Mayoral Charity last year. She raised £30,000 and set up “BETTY’S Breaks Fund” enabling cares to go on a short respite break away from all their home duties.

It also enables poorer families who live hand to mouth to replace a washer etc which as a carer is being used all day every day.

T S SCIMITAR

£1000 Presented to T S Scimitar over the year. T S Scimitar provides such wonderful opportunities for young boys and girls in St Helens.  Their leaders give them focus and purpose to see a bigger brighter world.  We know from our member Doreen Larson what a huge difference it makes to their lives in training them to be good citizens.  Most importantly these children are kept off the streets and kept occupied which gives them purpose.  T.S Scimitar has just won two awards in recognition of what they are doing

YOUNG CARERS    Nicola Whittle and Sally Pitcher    £1000

Young Carers is managed by PSS- Personal Services Society whose head quarters are based in Liverpool.  St Helens branch is a Side Project and helps many young people in a variety of ways.

One of our own members Alison Jesse raised this £1000 with her beautiful Christmas crafts.

Young Carers aims are to raise awareness and support for young people and children with significant caring responsibilities.  i.e.: parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers. It enables the young people to receive appropriate assessment and support to enable them to live a healthy life and achieve their full potential. This money will help fund days out for all to enjoy and provide a little light relief for all the young people.

MACMILLAN
BIGGEST
COFFEE MORNING

Was ours the biggest Coffee Morning? Yes it sure was in Merseyside anyway. Nearly 300 ladies excitedly arrived at Knowsley to enjoy coffee and home made biscuits whilst enjoying the sumptuous surroundings of Knowsley Hall. A really good day was enjoyed by all who attended.

UNIFORM DAY

St Helens Club held a fun night for a good cause.  Members dressed in Uniform to support of one of their latest projects, to supply uniforms for a school in Bilga India. Funds raised to date are £105  along with £270 from SI member Wendy Battersby’s school,  who held a non uniform day.  Another non uniform day was held at Haydock High School in December, where member Louise Hampson teaches, this event raised a magnificent  £300. Pictured below are  St Helens President Sue Black presenting the cheque for £1000 to Bernie Platt on behalf of Professor Arnott (her son in law) who is in charge of the project in Bilga India. The money is to buy 150 sets of school uniforms.

SHAP – SIOBHAN KENT    £1,900

In our previous Soroptimist year with Barbara Thompson as President, £1900 was donated to SHAP to enable a young person to experience a life changing experience.  This lovely girl was able to travel to Mount Kilimanjaro and take part in a 5 day trek to the summit along with one or two friends and other young people.

She came to club to report on her life changing trip showing fabulous photos, and relayed her experiences in a very articulate and mature way.  Club were glad to meet her.
