Recycling-Plastic Bag Hats
Stockport was renowned in the past for hat making and the town’s Hatting Museum showed a great interest in our project to raise awareness of recycling by making hats from plastic carrier bags. An exhibition was mounted in co-operation with the Borough Environment & Economic Development Services. The Project has since won the Soroptimist International Best Practice Award and was commended by the Prince of Wales.
Two showcases are currently in the Museum each with information about the environment and Soroptimists. Altogether the Project has engendered nearly 300 column inches of publicity.
S I Stockport’s unusual way of bringing people’s attention to a very serious subject has given us the opportunity to exhibit at Stockport’s Environment Fair, International Women’s Day Fairs and the Heritage weekend at the Main Art Gallery. Powys County Council has one of our hats in an environment exhibition and hats are used in schools. One of the hats was donated to The Catalyst Science and Discovery Centre in Widnes which has an out reach activity “the not so rotten rubbish ” road show. The collection was modelled by children from a special needs school at their Environment Show. Talks are given to local Groups
One of the particularly elegant hats won the Ascot Ball Hat Competition on the Queen Mary 2, All these giving the opportunity to highlight the reason for making the hats and information about Soroptimist International.
