International Women’s Day March 8th Every Year

In 2014 we are joining with many other women’s groups and individuals from the Swindon area to celebrate International Women’s Day.  There will be lots of different events taking place at Swindon Library where Swindon Soroptimists will have a manned display and stall.  The theme of the day will be ” Respect not violence”.  There will be workshops, exhibitions and other events.  A special t-shirt has been designed.

Also there will be a regional gathering when Members from throughout the South West will converge on Taunton.  There will be a March through the town and a presentation to the lady Mayor of Malala’s book.

Every Year the Swindon Soroptimist Club has a display in the Central Library showing the different ways Soroptimists work to improve the lives of women and girls.

Swindon Soroptimists again organised the “Join me on the Bridge”  event in 2013.  We invited anyone interested in issues of equality, violence against women, women’s health and peace in the world, to join with us on International Women’s Day. We  assembled on the footbridge over Princes Street near the Wyvern Theatre at 12.30pm in pouring rain.

We aimed to show that Swindon people are willing to stand up for women to have equal status in every facet of life here and throughout the world.  We handed out leaflets on issues such as Trafficking, and Ovarian Cancer. We also obtained signatures on the Purple Teardrop Campaign’s Petition against sex for sale advertisements.
