Speaking Competition 2011

The second Girl Guide Speaking competition was held at the Heronstone Hotel in Bridgend – the winner was Jessica Matthews – pictured above with Regional President Rhian at our meeting on December 2nd. Jessica once again gave her speech – all about the image of alcohol and the teenage girl

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Like a budding flower Wales South Region bloomed in its inaugural All Wales Girls Speaking Competition.

Challenged by Past Federation President Jackie Mosedale to hold a speaking competition in the Federation’s 75th year, Wales South decided to link up with Girl Guiding Cymru for this programme action project.

And it worked!

The ALL Wales Final was held at the beautiful home of Girl Guiding Cymru in Bronierion, MidWales. We had two guides competing, Laura Smith from the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales and Rhiannon Parry from Llanasa Rangers in North Wales. Both girls spoke to the theme “Is the Girls Place in the Home?”

It was extremely difficult to choose between them, and the judges – Sue Thoma (RegionalPresident), Cathyrn Brooker (Chief Commissioner for Girl Guiding Cymru) and Helen Murdoch (a Soroptimist in Bridgend and also President of Girl Guiding Cymru) only came to a decision after the exemptore speech.

Laura Smith of the Vale of Glamorgan Rangers was the winner and was delighted to receive the accolade and her prize of £50 of gift vouchers from WH Smith. At a recent Girl Guiding CymruAGM, Laura Smith was asked to speak and said that the speaking competition inspired her to “come back into Guiding” as she was taking a break. She re-joined as a Ranger and has now also become a member of the Advocates Panel at Girl Guiding UK – so in her words, “it has led to lots of exciting opportunities, given me confidence and really helped me develop.”

She was also delighted to meet the girls from North Wales at the final and they shared ideas about what they do in their Ranger units/meetings – they’re keeping in touch too.

A great day was had by all, rounded off by a tour of the house itself and a chance to mingle with members of Girl Guiding Cymru.

Wales South members were moved by the words Laura spoke at the recent Guides meeting, and all the more keen to continue the project in 2011 – once again working with Girl Guides Cymru to challenge the women of the future.

Dear All

Please help us to raise more for LLF through just using the web as you always do – BUT PLEASE USE SITES WHICH PAY US COMMISSION….this doesn’t involve you in extra costs but it does help to boost our funds, PAINLESSLY. So far only 37 people have signed up, and not all are members or from S Wales – compared with our regional membership of about 600…I know that not all use the web but lots of us do…please do help in this way. The credit crunch will not make it any easier to raise funds – and every little helps. Just exploring the options to change insurers (car, home, travel, pets) and getting a better deal for yourself can raise £40+. I look forward to seeing many more of you signing up and helping in this way.

I have attached the latest information/instruction sheet for the relevant sites.

If you are running a fundraising event for us and would like to have it publicised on the web please let them know and send me your flyer to post.

Kind regards
Kay
