Programme Action

Programme Action Awards 2011

The following clubs were presented with Wales-South Programme Action Awards at our AGM held at Brackla Community Centre on June 18th

Joint First

SI Neath raised funds by various means to help build a new toilet/ sanitation block for a school in Romania. The school was visited by some club members during a visit last august to their friendship club S.I.Targoviste. Following the visit, the appalling conditions of the school sanitation block galvanised the club to begin fund raising asap to provide a newly built sanitation block. They worked with friendship links in S.I TARGOVISTE and S.I. EUGENE  OREGON, USA to raise funds .This fitted well with programme focus as well as meeting personal wishes of club members and past and current presidents. The sanitation block will be built in the very near future . This will enable students of the school to access clean, hygienic toilet facilities with dignity, privacy and safety to afford them that very basic human right and enhance their experience of attending an educational establishment

SI Bridgend support the education of young girls in Chanaser Goth Primary School by supporting Talat Pasha and SI Karachi Central in their endeavours to provide good quality education for the young children who attend the primary school as they do not have the right to free education. They have successfully continued the project over the last four years by providing support for girls in the secondary school and books and furniture to equip one primary classroom. The project are pleased has impacted on the children of Chanaser Goth Schools and helped to provide quality education for the girls.

2nd Prize

SI Haverfordwest for their project on human trafficking which is being presented to secondary schools in the area.

3rd Prize

SI Barry for their project on interviewing techniques which involved both boys and girls in a local comprehensive school and will be continued next year.

Commended

Programme Action Awards 2010

During our AGM on 19th June 2010 the first Regional Programme Action Awards were presented. The photograph shows Club winners together with Regional President Sue Thomas and Regional Programme Action Officer Pam Allinson.

In this first year of the awards the clubs recognised were:-

Highly Commended – SI Cardigan for their Bibliathon – a 3 Day AND 3 Night event which involved all members of their community and other SI club members reading the Bible from start to finish. This even raised over 6ooo pounds – well done to everyone who took part in this event.

Third place – SI Port Talbot for their Tools for Self Reliance Project – this project has taken the club into the town centre to raise awareness of the way that old sewing machines and other tools can be used to support women in developing countries become self reliant by providing them with the means to start their own businesses. The club has been supported by the public and other clubs and have collected over 200 seing machines as well as other tools which Tools for Self Reliance based in Ystradgynlais then refurbish and send abroad.

Second Place – SI Tenby for their project raising awareness of Human Trafficking in their area and across Wales. Starting with a film showing of Amazing Grace which raised awareness of modern slavery/human trafficking – this project has been taken into schools and children from the Tenby area produced art and written work to raise more awareness of this devastating problem. Working with Joyce Watson (AM) the club have taken their concerns to the Senedd and their work has been included in reports written by Ms Watson (http://humantraffickinginwales.co.uk/). The work of the children have been published by SI Tenby and this booklet is available from the club – proceeds of which will go to supprt further work in this area. More information can be found on the above website also on http://www.blueblindfold.co.uk/and SI’s own project http://www.purpleteardrop.org.uk/index.html

First place – SI Cardiff – The SI Cardiff & District Education Trust ( now a registered charity) supports young girls of secondary school age on the Cape Verdian island of Sao Vicente. On these islands education is free until the age of 14. Many able children have to leave school at 14, as their parents are unable to meet the costs involved for them to remain in school. The Trust contibutes approximately £140 a year to enable one girl to stay on at school. Without the support of the Trust, these girls would probably undertake jobs below their educational potential. The girls supported by the Cape Verde Project are carefully selected and must be motivated, keen and willing to work hard in school. When the project started in 1996, six girls were supported and most are now in a profession. Currently, 13 girls are supported by the Trust .and the project has extended beyond SI Cardiff as other clubs and SI members are working with the Education Trust to support girls on the island SI Cardiff & District and SI Bridgend sponsor two girls; SI Aireborough and SI Swansea sponsor a girl; Pam Allinson a member of SI Barry; Carys Brown of SI Bridgend; Enid Child and Roger & Jacquie James of SI Cardiff & District, Joyce Chatterton of SI Bridgend, an anonymous donor and Liz Evans all sponsor a girl. This project was one of the projects ‘showcased’ during the Cardiff Conference.

Well done to the clubs who have been recognised this year just a small selection of the work that is going on in our region.

Dear All

Please find attached the Regional Programme Action Minutes from November’s meeting.  These have been sent separately to Club Programme Action Reps so apologies to those who get them twice, but I know other members like to cast a glance over them so am sending them out more widely.

Also a reminder that the next regional meeting is on the 6th February.  There are two excellent speakers for the day – in the morning we have Monica Dickens to speak about ’A Dignified Revolution’ – http://dignifiedrevolution.org.uk/    In the afternoon we have Jeff Edge from Mary’s Meals – this is an excellent project that you may have seen at conference as they had a stand  http://www.marysmeals.org/

I know President Sue, other regional officers and myself look forward to seeing you there.  (And we will finish in time for you to get back in time for the Wales/England match later that afternoon!).

To all Wales South members:

Hi everyone,
Can I please clarify some web sites and passwords and there seems to be a little confusion at the moment.

1.   The International database. which is used for reporting our Programme Action work.  This is accessed via the Soroptimist International website – http://www.soroptimistinternational.org/  and via the ‘Online Reporting’ section on the left hand side.  The specific address for the database is http://reports.soroptimistinternational.org/  – you can also search there and see what amazing projects are undertaken throughout our Federation.    I am now a total convert to the database – the statistics being gathered are amazing!  You can discover via the database is in the previous 12 months, over $9,000,000 has been raised by Soroptimist clubs internationally.  Wow!!  What a great statistic that is!    (And again, why it is so important to get your club’s work onto the database).  To access the database you need the username of sigbi and the password stockport.

2.   The UK Programme Action Committee website can be found at http://www.soroptimist-ukpac.org/ There is a great range of information on there on the role of the UK PAC and the work undertaken by clubs in the UK.  You will hopefully shortly be able to see the photos of our Zip Wire Challenge for LLF on there.  As I have said before, each club has a page on this website - if you send me photos and a short paragraph on one of your projects I will pass them on to Heather knott who is the webmistress and will ensure they go into your club’s section.  Action photos preferred!   The password to enter the members section of this website is springchicken.

I would be grateful if members would keep a record of these and pass them on to new members, etc.  If any of the above is still not clear, please do contact me.

Many thanks
Pam

To Wales South Clubs:
I have recently received a link to the Chief Police Officer’s review of what measures can be taken to tackle serial perpetrators of violence against women and thought members might be interested in reading it.  Be aware before you print – it is nearly 97 pages long – it can be read perfectly well on screen.
A review can be found at: http://www.acpo.police.uk/policies.asp

FGM

To all clubs

Please see below/attachements for details of training on FGM, Forced Marriage/Honour Based Violence/Domestic Abuse from a BME perspective. These courses are being put on by BAWSO – those who were at the February regional meeting will remember we have an excellent talk from Shaheen from BAWSO and may wish to follow up by attending one/all of these courses. Do note that the cost of courses is much cheaper if you go as a representative as your club/organisation rather than an individual. I’m sure clubs could justify paying for someone to attend as these are areas of Violence Against Women that we are all concerned about.

Domestic Abuse

Dear All
I have recenctly received an updated Map for Domestic Abuse Services in Wales (attached). I know it has at least one error on it in that there is no One Stop Shop in the Vale of Glamorgan but hopefully is otherwise accurate. This mapping exercise has been carried as part of the updatingof the Welsh Assembly Government’s Domestic Abuse Strategy. If anyone else is aware of any inaccuracies could they let me know please.
Many thanks
Pam

CLUSTER BOMBS

Dear All
As most of you know, Kay Richmond is the Soroptomist Rep on Landmine Action. I thought you should all have the opportunity of reading this latest email (see below) and attachment from Kay detailing the latest discussion on the Cluster Munitions ban. It makes very interesting reading and good to hear that Soroptimism was mentioned in the debate.
