SKIRTING SCIENCE 2012 report to club

Refreshments and leaflets were offered to supporters and passers-by to enable locals to better understand what Soroptimist International hope to achieve through their Programme of Action. Donations received will be sent to Oxfam.

Weston Soroptimists were moved to take action when a resolution in support of Malala was passed at the Annual Conference of SIGBI (Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland) last month.

On Remembrance Sunday, Weston-super-Mare Soroptimists handed a letter to John Penrose urging him to support any measures aimed at persuading the Pakistani Government to bring to justice the gunmen who shot Malala Yousafzai and to enable girls in Pakistan to have full and unimpeded access to education.

On receiving the letter John Penrose said   “I’m very happy to accept this letter from Weston Soroptimists, and I’ll take it to the Foreign Secretary personally.

Soroptimists also signed the petition which Gordon Brown, UN Education Envoy, delivered to the President of Pakistan on Saturday, 10^th November, exactly one month after Malala was shot.

SI Weston super mare have a very active Friendship link with Thames Valley, whose member Rose Moriba came to talk to our club about Female genital Mutilation (FMG). She campaigns in her home village against FGM by educating the women & sending supplies to her village in the Kori chiefdom to empower them and enable them to become independent from the men by farming. She also supplies the school with books and this is where we come in. Science textbooks were going to be thrown out at Hans Price and our member Anne Graham rescued them and they have been delivered to Rose and onward to Sierra Leone .This also linked with International Literacy Day which was Sept 8^th. However this initiative will be ongoing – with another shipment going in the New Year. Anne has more books from other departments of the school.

We have a wealth of archived material carefully stored by Heather, but  which does not often see the light of day.  Here are a couple of photographs of our club dating back to the era of the Queen’s Coronation. The dinner resembles an  murder mystery evening and if I’m not mistaken Alfred Hitcock was a guess at the dinner? Have a look and see for your-self!

Tea Party for the Elderly

A photo from the Contact the Elderly tea party  held at Joan’s house . The lady in the centre is Violet and she is  96.  Jessie is on the right. Just to clarify, 3 members of our club have volunteered to host tea parties for the charity Contact the Elderly – my-self, Joan and  Mandy – Mandy is hosting one soon, I had one on March 25th. We are likely to be hosting once, possibly twice, a year.  Each group gathers one Sunday a month in different venues and they are driven there by regular drivers.  Melanie.

IPP Ann with Ann Widdecombe

Soroptimist International of Weston-super-Mare held a very successful fund-raising event at The Winter gardens in the town, “An
Evening with Ann Widdecombe”. Over 200 guests sat down to listen to the former politician deliver a highly entertaining account of her life in
politics, her career as a novelist and her involvement in “Strictly Come Dancing”. Following the talk Ann answered questions from the audience on a
variety of subjects for almost an hour. Nothing was taboo and Ann answered every question honestly and in her trademark forthright manner. This was then
