● Overseas Aid

Soroptimism is a global organisation so we have the opportunity to help in many corners of the world:

3E Project: Healthcare in the Gambia

This is a partnership between Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI) and the international medical charity Maternal and Childhealth Advocacy International (MCAI) – and its partner Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG).  This is a three year fundraising challenge for us and other clubs in our Federation which will save the lives of countless critically ill women, babies and children in the Gambia.

GOLD project in the Gambia

GOLD stands for Guiding Overseas Linked with Development (GOLD).  This scheme allows Girlguiding UK members aged between 18 and 30 to take part in community development projects overseas.  Vanessa Ellis, a local Guider, has been selected for the first GOLD trip to The Gambia and will travel there in September  2012.  We have given Vanessa £100 to buy equipment to take with her.  We look forward to hearing about her experiences on her return.

Wonders of Waste (WoW) bags

We are delighted that a team of women in the Philippines under Helen Mitchell’s inspired leadership is once again producing these colourful and environmentally brilliant bags.  As many of us have now owned and used these bags for years we can vouch for their durability and practicality.

We work with St. Swithun’s School in Winchester on this project.  The Diocese of Winchester has close ties with the Lango Diocese in Northern Uganda and has pledged support to their clergy as the district emerges from a 20-year war with the Lord’s Resistance Army. We are providing a 5-year scholarship to a local girl, Miriam Alum (pictured), so that she can complete her secondary education at St Katherine’s School in the diocese.
