Bee Plus!
The worldwide declining honey bee population will affect our diet and the economy; one third of our food comes from fruit and vegetables pollinated by honey bees. LASI, the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects, at Sussex University, has started a 5 year research project, (funded by Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), about Honey Bee Health and Wellbeing.
Meanwhile there are small things that can be done at a local level. The Bee Plus project aims to educate 7-9 year olds in junior schools about honey bees, the problems and possible consequences and provide actiivites that may help. Excellent resource packs are provided free to the schools taking part.
SI Woking has agreed to sponsor schools in their area and are the first SI club to get them fully signed up for the Bee Plus project. Barnsbury Primary and Kingfield School are the first to have forms signed and submitted, along with cheques for the admin costs of £40. We are delighted that initial feedback from the schools is very positive – the children are engaged, excited and informed on this important issue.
