SIGBI President’s February 2020 Blog

Here we are in February, and it’s a leap year which means we do have an extra day.  I am grateful for that as there is a lot happening in February in the lead up to March….

Thank you to the PR and Marketing team who have worked on our next social media campaign to support International Women’s Day 2020 on March 8th, the theme is #EachforEqual.  The International Women’s Day website has lots of resources  The message is that ‘An equal world is an enabled world.  Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.  We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.  Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world.’  This has a resonance for me.   It is the basis of our Programme project work and why we have ECOSOC consultative status at the United Nations.  It also needs to underpin the leadership behaviours that we need to display as members of one of the leading international women’s organisations.

I have attended several meetings in the last few weeks that brought this home to me.  One was the leadership showcased at Number 63’s ( Annual General Meeting.  In the last year, the Board has increased the income by £100,000 and through innovation, commitment and marketing have increased the occupancy of the hotel to over 80% and guests via TripAdvisor have given it a rating of 4.5 out of 5.  I congratulate them on their achievements to date and look forward to what they will achieve in the coming year.  Ohhh, and the Number 63 gin was available.

As you know, our SIGBI Board needed to cover the Director of Membership role while Judith Grocott recovers from her current health issues.  I am pleased to tell you that we asked Claire Bell, our SIGBI HR Liaison, to step into the role and she has accepted.  Claire is a member of SI Eastbourne and has been a part of the Dispute Resolution Procedure working party since July 2019 and is playing a large part in ensuring that we have a watertight procedure, which will launch at the end of April 2020.

I met with both Claire and Dishi Attwood, our Growth Plan Ambassador, at Number 63 and they will be working together to deliver the membership part of our strategic plan and will do a great job.  I send Judith an update every week and I know that she welcomes hearing how things are progressing.  I send her best wishes for her continued improvement.

So, this is a preparatory month for some key initiatives in March and April.    Remember to showcase how your projects ‘challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.  WE STAND UP FOR WOMEN!
