11 October is the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child. International days give us an opportunity to educate our members and the public on issues of concern. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool, so let us as Soroptimists use these days to show what we can do as an organisation.
The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
This year’s theme, set by UNICEF is ‘Our time is now – our rights, our future’.
To commemorate this important day, Soroptimist International has compiled 4 videos of Federation Presidents interviewing a girl. The SIGBI one is below, but you can see all four on the Soroptimist Interational website: https://www.soroptimistinternational.org/idg22/.
