President Carol Evans welcomed Midland East Region President, Sandra Angood, to the June meeting of Soroptimist International Amber Valley.
Sandra told us about her life and times as a Soroptimist, starting in St Andrew’s Club in Scotland and now in SI Peterborough. As a result of various family circumstances, her theme, throughout her current year in office in the Midland East Region, has been ‘Hidden Disabilities’. She was thanked by Bertie Masters.
In the Business Meeting, which followed, Janet Stevens reported that the recent Fashion Show had made a profit of £365, to pay for the air fare and visa of one of the Children of Chernobyl, who will be visiting our area this summer.
Gill O’Hagan had, that very day, packed another sixty backpacks for Mary’s Meals. These contain basic needs, allowing children to take advantage of whatever education is available. Gill had just phoned the delighted headquarters of Mary’s Meals in Glasgow and awaited the arrival of their courier.
Arrangements are underway for our Annual Garden Party, in the grounds of Wingfield Park Hall, on Sunday 16th July, 2-15 pm onwards. If it is wet, it will take place in Pentrich Village Hall. So far, through the years, it has been an idyllic event, with Cream Teas, Magic and Conjuring for children, a splendid variety of stalls, and nostalgia for all. Proceeds will be for the Children’s Air Ambulance and other charities.
