At our September meeting Ann Hemp from Derbyshire Young Carers Association spoke about the support they offer to young carers aged 5-18 across Derbyshire.
Started in 1988 they now have over 5000 young carers within our County, who are helping to care for a family member or sibling who has a physical disability or mental illness. Referrals are often made through a School Liaison Officer or members of the Local Multi Agency Team. Any young person can talk to a Support Worker who can offer help with a variety of things such as planning their school work, cooking, paying bills, listening and reassurance. They also offer an Activities Programme for the Young Carers which may include group meetings with other young people in a similar situation offering workshops and games, sports activities and sessions to help with Healthy Eating, Managing Household Budget and College Applications. Their main aim is to give help and offer the support a young carer may need. It is supported by DCC but is also a registered charity.
Ann Hemp was thanked by member Anne Woollett and given a donation from SI Amber Valley.
At our recent Summer Fair we raised nearly £600 for distributing to local Charities.
Our next fund raiser is a Fashion Show at the Palmer Morewood Social Club Alfreton on Tuesday 17th September at 7.30pm, entry is £4, there will be clothes modelled, then available for purchase. All welcome.
