On Thursday 4th June club members met at a secret garden in Balnamore Ballymoney, where the most amazing garden was revealed. As we moved around the garden, an explanation of the work involved developing the different areas was given by head gardener Norman Carson. It was a most amazing garden with ponds with water fountains,a vegetable garden, a walled garden and even a fully furnished thatched cottage complete with a peat fire. Some members were ready to move in! After our tour, members travelled to President Helen’s home for a buffet supper prepared by members of the social committee.
As we reach the end of our 50th year of the club we are pleased to be able to look back on some achievements. We were able to promote awareness of SI Ballymoney during the year with a display in the Ballymoney Museum put together by the curator. We now have a “pop up” display poster featuring pictures of various celebrations since our formation which we can use at functions! We also had special Christmas stamps produced for us by Royal Mail which were sold to club members. Hopefully some people handling the post wondered who we were! Monies raised during the year were given to Headway, the specialist head injury support group, to fund a specifically adapted computer course for victims of head injury in our area. Also supported during the year were the Ballymoney Food Bank, the R.N.L.I., The Palliative Care Unit at the Robinson

In May the members of S.I. Ballymoney and District put on their trainers and “walked the talk”. We walked round Ballymoney’s Riverside Park and while doing so raised sponsorship for the “Mums for Mums” charity and the local St John Ambulance. Mums for Mums is an NGO based in Mekelle, Northern Ethiopia which helps young single women to gain skills training and life skills so they can become self reliant. Its achievements to date include education in HIV/AIDS prevention and control, reproductive health and family planning and the start up of the Kate Community for Elderly Women. This latter work has given a real boost to the elderly. Life expectancy in Ethiopia is 47 and there is no provision for the elderly. In the day care centre they can have social contact, food, healthcare and access to showers. We raised £700 on our walk and split
