{"id":5017,"date":"2022-04-03T16:40:10","date_gmt":"2022-04-03T15:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bangor-and-district\/?p=5017"},"modified":"2022-04-03T16:53:28","modified_gmt":"2022-04-03T15:53:28","slug":"climate-change-the-environment-and-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bangor-and-district\/2022\/04\/03\/climate-change-the-environment-and-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate Change, the Environment and Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bangor-and-district\/files\/2022\/04\/SI-Rhyl-bee-project-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bangor-and-district\/files\/2022\/04\/SI-Rhyl-bee-project-1-300x294.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5026\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bangor-and-district\/files\/2022\/04\/SI-Rhyl-bee-project-1-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bangor-and-district\/files\/2022\/04\/SI-Rhyl-bee-project-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOn 19th February 2022 our Region: Cheshire, North Wales and Wirral, held a Conference at St George&#8217;s Hotel, Llandudno about Climate Change, with local speakers from education, politics and charities.<br \/>\nThe first Barbara Dixon Soroptimist project meeting competition was held and, after careful consideration, it was won by SI Rhyl and their Bee Project.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/rhyl-and-district\/what-we-do\/bees-in-the-community\/\">Rhyl Bee Project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some things that were said:-<br \/>\nLlandudno will be underwater in 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>COP26 &#8216;keeping +1.5 C alive&#8217; is not true.<\/p>\n<p>Saving the giant redwoods in California was the first project Soroptimists worked on and they were saved &#8211; in 2020 they are at risk of dying due to extreme drought.<\/p>\n<p>Annie Merry commended us for having a voice &#8216;at the top table&#8217; to influence the UN.<\/p>\n<p>The Soroptimists were challenged to lobby to shut down tax havens as this would help climate change action and social justice.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildlife Trust said it would take 100 years to restore all peatlands in Wales at the current rate (peat is a more valuable store of carbon than trees).<\/p>\n<p>This is a nature emergency as well as a climate emergency &#8211; we need a biodiversity reversal.<br \/>\nFor more information:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/cheshire\/region-conference-climate-change-2\/\">Climate Change Conference<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 19th February 2022 our Region: Cheshire, North Wales and Wirral, held a Conference at&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":751,"featured_media":5018,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5017","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-club-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Climate Change, the Environment and Us | News | Blog | Events | SI Bangor and District<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"SI Bangor and District : Blog &amp; News : Climate Change, the Environment and Us : Keep up to date with the latest news, articles and events from the Soroptimists of SI Bangor and District .
