To coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Barry & District Soroptimists, President Jackie issued a 50th challenge at the AGM to members of the Club. Groups and individuals were challenged to undertake an act of service which incorporates 50.
The first group, led by Kay Thomas, responded to this challenge by collecting 50 plus greetings cards in the month of May, for patients on the Sam Davies Ward in Barry Hospital. The idea was to enable those on the ward to stay connected with relatives and friends while in hospital.
Atal Y Fro benefit from the Soroptimists’ 50 challenge
The ladies in Atal y Fro, the women’s refuge, were the recipients of June’s 50th Challenge. Members collected personal hygiene items to donate to women victims of domestic violence. Lana Gould from Atal Y Fro was very appreciative of the Soroptimists’ support and said that the items would be most useful for those seeking emergency temporary accommodation.
Group B decided to set themselves personal 50th challenges. They have started!

Soroptimist friend and supporter Jane Brook has risen to the 50th challenge by knitting 50 plus ( 100 in fact) chicks for the Velindre chick Appeal. Every year for the past 16 years SI Barry & District members have knitted chicks for the Easter Appeal. Last year they reached 20,000 chicks. Thank you Jane. If anyone else feels they can do the 50 challenge and knit chicks, please contact us !.
