50 Glorious Years!
On 13th January Soroptimist International Barry & District celebrated 50 years since they were first chartered. Members held an Afternoon Tea at Bryn Hafren School in the company of local Civic dignitaries – Her Worship the Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, and fellow Soroptimist, Councillor Janice Charles; Town Mayors of Barry, Llantwit Major and Penarth; Mr Alun Cairns, MP Secretary of State for Wales, and friends that they had have worked with over the past 50 years. In all there were representatives from 28 different charities and organisations present, as well as over 40 Soroptimists from the Club.
We are very fortunate to still have as active members in the Club three of the original 23 founder members, Mary Edmunds – three times Club President and Vivien Liles – three times Club President and Regional President. Everyone spontaneously stood and applauded these two remarkable ladies.as they were presented with 50 Year service certificates . Unfortunately Diane Dixon was unable to attend..
President Jackie said “In this 50th year we are pleased to announce that we are a flourishing Club – one of the largest Soroptimist Clubs in South Wales. This year we have had a number of new members joining us and we are excited by the prospect of the new ideas they bring to the Club, while mindful that our future is very much built on the solid foundations of those members who have given many years service. “
There was then a presentation of long service certificates to:
Mary Joyce Morgan for 40 Years
Clare Hart for 35 Years
Iris Hopkins for 35 Years
Christine Drury for 25 Years
Pam Price Thomas for 25 Years
One of the many highlights of the afternoon was a Visual Presentation of Working with our Partners which featured pictures of 50 different projects covering Education, Health, Campaigns and Environmental projects etc.
These 50th celebrations were generously sponsored by Robertsons Solicitors, The Gallery Boutique Barry, Homemade Wales, the Principality Building Society, The White Gecko Craft Lounge, Dinas Powis and CVS Vets.
A number of local businesses (Jade Boutique, Image Fashions, Barnums, Wenvoe Garden Centre, Seashore Grill, and The Barry Co-Op) kindly donated raffle prizes.
Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School Choir provided two delightful musical items thanks to Lewis Green, Head of Music. This was a very appropriate venue for the afternoon because the Club has forged very close links with the school over the years and for 35 years it was where the President taught. President Jackie expressed appreciation to the Head teacher Mr Tyrone Davies for allowing us to use the school and in particular the assistance given by Mary Davis, Deputy Head.
Soroptimst Audrey recited an informative and amusing poem which she had written for the occasion entitled “50 Glorious Years” .
