Celebrations and Congratulations!

SI Barry and District – 50th Anniversary Charter Luncheon April 15th 2018

In 1968 the Charter for the formation of the newly formed Soroptimist International Barry and District was presented to the Club in the Memorial Hall, Barry. Hence the same venue was chosen for the recent 50th Anniversary Charter Lunch.  Present were three of the founder members, Mary Edmunds, Diane Dixon and Vivian Liles, who are still active members and whose enthusiasm and experience is greatly valued. Among the 117 guests, made up of Soroptimists,  family and friends,  the Club was delighted to welcome Sue Biggs, the Federation President of Soroptimist International, Great Britain and Ireland; two Past Federation Presidents, Carwen Wynne Howells and Ann Hodgson and  Amanda Rees, South Wales Regional President. Representatives of 11 Soroptimist Clubs including 7 Club Presidents, were also present,  as well as Club members Janice Charles, in her role as Mayor of Vale of Glamorgan, and Jane Hutt AM.

Following a lovely meal and the speeches, Audrey Hirst read one of her poems, written especially for the occasion, and introduced  the delightful duo of Alicia Hooper and Richard West, who provided a musical trip down 50 glorious years of the Club, which reflected its fun, friendship and service.

President Jackie Memory then thanked Club members for their amazing support – she said it truly is a Club to be proud of. Her personal thanks also went to Josie White, who produced the perfect cake for the occasion and Hilary West for the floral table decorations. Guests were given a copy of the Club history, which had been written especially to mark the occasion.  President Jackie expressed her extreme gratitude to archivist, Vivien Liles, who had kept detailed records of the highs and lows of the Club and Iris Hopkins, whose help had been invaluable in the writing of the book.

Congratulations to Viv Liles for winning the Annual Handicap Competition at Barrivale Bridge Club and being awarded the Bill Shore Trophy

Below is the photo taken at the Cardiff and Vale NHS Staff Recognition Awards Presentation at City Hall on Friday 8th March 2018, when SI Barry & District were nominated in the category of Volunteer of the Year Award. Hadyn Canter was the worthy winner for helping out at the stroke rehabilitation unit in Llandough hospital after himself having a stroke. It was a lovely evening and we were pleased to be recognised for our support of the Sam Davies Ward.
