Collections and Projects: Food Bank and Recycling Bras 2016

Bedford Soroptomists support foodbank collections

On Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd July members supported the foodbank promotional weekend at Tesco, Riverside Drive. Members approached people as the entered the  store, gave out shopping lists and encouraged customers to add extra items to their trolley before placing these in the foodbank collection boxes. Bedford foodbank http://bedford.foodbank.org.uk/ provides emergency food to approximately 6000 people in Bedford each year and the promotional weekends provide a welcome boost to donations received via the permanent supermarket collection boxes.

140 recycled bras head to Senegal

Bras are one of the club’s many recycling projects and 140 were delivered to Oxfam in Bedford High Street. The store manager and volunteers were delighted with the contribution. Most bras are forwarded by Oxfam to Frip Ethique a social enterprise in Senegal which employs mostly women and sells clothing via local market traders. Bras are particularly popular as African countries lack the complex technology to manufacture bras.
