\"\"<\/a>At the invitation of SI Hull, members of SI Beverley and District attended a meeting to hear from Julie Goode, the High Sheriff of the East Riding – only the third woman to hold this post in 1000 years!<\/p>\n

In the photograph she is wearing her specially made uniform of black velvet. The jacket has tails and is trimmed with specially designed cut steel buttons. Her jabot is silk, trimmed with lace hand made by members of the Wolds lace makers group. It took 400 hours to complete this commission.<\/p>\n

The hat was made by a milliner in Beverley.<\/p>\n

The men who become High Sheriff have a ceremonial outfit which is based on 18th century court dress. The women may wear black, navy , bottle green or burgundy coloured velvet. The ostrich feather is customary decoration for all hats and High Sheriffs wear black patent shoes with cut steel buckles.<\/p>\n

During her year of office, Julie has attended over 200 events on behalf of Her Majesty. Her particular role is to support the people who work in the security and law & order careers. Much of the work is ceremonial but she has tried to give her patronage to various sectors of the Police, judiciary and staff in the Fire Brigade & Life Boat.<\/p>\n

Her emphasis has been to create awareness of the support available in the East Riding for victims of domestic violence. Julie wishes to continue with this work after her year of office comes to an end.<\/p>\n

The High Sheriff does not qualify for any financial help at all, not even a driver!<\/p>\n

This was a fascinating insight into this honorary post and an enjoyable evening with sister Soroptimists from our neighbouring Club.<\/p>\n
