SI Bolton’s Clean for the Queen

SI Bolton’s Clean for the Queen

On a sunny Saturday morning in March, members of SI Bolton met on Moss Bank Way, Smithills and spent a couple of hours litter picking on a stretch of road that we have cleaned for over 30 years. This year the clean up was part of a concerted countrywide effort to clean for the Queen in the year of her 90th birthday.  Other organisations in Bolton took part on the same weekend to litter pick in other areas around the town. Our litter pickers collected 10 bags, and at the same time made sure that the cans and bottles were kept separate..  Among the surprising items collected were a damaged drone, two huge umbrellas and part of a mechanical pump! If you are travelling along Moss Bank Way you may see our signage, “Soroptimist International of Bolton” under the Bolton Council sign which says “Love Bolton Hate

This report appeared in the Bolton News in May 2015 Soroptimist International of Bolton were horrified to hear of the earthquake in Nepal as for the last 2 years the Club has enjoyed a close relationship with the Soroptimists of Kathmandhu with exchange visits and the undertaking of a joint project to enable the education of 5 girls from very impoverished backgrounds.  This is a long term project to which SI Bolton is committed.  Therefore, it was with trepidation that two of our members, Margaret Baker and Jackie Roberts, tried to make contact with members of the Kathmandhu Soroptimists shortly after the first earthquake struck. There was initially no communication and they feared the worst but after two days communication was resumed and they were extremely relieved to discover that that the members of the Kathmandhu club were safe as were the girls, although their

It was my great privilege to return to Nepal this December to visit our joint project with the Soroptimists of Kathmandu  and meet the five girls our club is supporting.  After a challenging journey out of the city to the village we were able to meet with Mandira and Nabina and talk to them and their teachers to hear how well they are getting on.  They are teenagers now and their needs are changing rapidly as they grow up.  There was much discussion as to where we should go from here to meet those needs. They are delightful girls.  Nabina would like to be a nurse and Mandira is interested in joining the police.  It is our hope that we can help those dreams become a reality.  Both girls are working as well as they can but  face enormous challenges in their homes that we

Twenty four members of SI Bolton and friends sat down in Yasmin’s beautiful lounge and dining room to sample the WORLD FEAST.  The hot and cold dishes available to sample were from the Seychelles, Italy, Spain , India, Mexico and Great Britain. Desserts included a magnificent Pavlova full of fresh cream and packed with luscious fruits, Tiramisu, fresh stawberries, melon and kiwi fruit. To finish there were cheeses from various countries. This wonderful evening of fine food and good company raised over £200 towards our project in Kathmandu, now in its third year, giving 5 girls access to education by providing uniforms, books and food to sustain them for the long distances they have to walk each day and therefore giving them the opportunity to attend school.

On a lovely sunny evening in June 9 members led by President Frankie and PA officer, Gina, clothed in high viz jackets and armed  with “grabbers” plus large plastic bags, set off to litter pick on the area of Moss Bank Way that we have taken responsibility for several years. Eight bags were filled with discarded drinks cans, bottles, crisp packets, plastic bage etc, even a couple of cigarette packets. (in previous years cigarette packete and ends made upm a large part of our litter collection).  The largest item we found was a car spoiler from an accident. You will see this in the photo. Another large item, found but not collected, was a local authority warning sign!!  We all had good fun and enjoyed the good weather.

The opportinity to revisit the Soroptimists of Kathmandu was too tempting to resist last year when I booked my holiday in Bhutan.  Although I only had one evening and one day in Nepal, the Kathmandu club organised an amazing event for me and also welcomed my two friends who were holidaying with me.  We were taken to the school that our girls attend (SI Bolton club are sponsoring the long term education of 5 girls) and were greeted warmly by SI members, school staff, parents and girls.  A huge banner was unveiled announcing the event which was held in one of the classrooms.  Everyone in the room introduced themselves  The girls were asked to speak about their families, schooling etc  which was quite a challenge for some of them.  We welcomed a new girl into the programme and gave her material for her school uniform, school books,
