Cementing Futures – Our Special Charity

An Education Charity

for children in poverty in Bangladesh

Registered Charity No 1129276

Cementing Futures was founded in 2009 by Soroptimist International of Bournemouth in response to needs identified by our friendship club, Soroptimist International of Dhaka and is run in partnership with Bangladeshi members of SI Dhaka. Our goal is to offer underprivileged children in the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh a brighter future through education.

Because of our close links with SI Dhaka we know that we can trust that all monies sent to them go directly to the educational programmes we support. Members of Cementing Futures and SI Bournemouth stay in regular contact with educational programme providers and where this includes visiting Dhaka these trips are totally self-funded. At least 95% of monies raised go to Bangladesh with 100% of that going directly to the projects.

Cementing Futures supports two projects in Dhaka, Bangladesh and there is a further literacy project partially supported by Soroptimist International of Bournemouth.

The first project supported by Cementing Futures is in a slum area of Adabor, Dhaka, and education is provided by our partners Nijera Shikhi, an NGO. Professor Suraiya Siddiquy, the Executive Director of Nijera Shikhi, is also an active member of SI Dhaka. 75 children, both girls and boys, are currently being educated in this project.  We fund their education, a daily nutritional snack, training and refresher training of teachers, rent for the building and health related classes for their mothers.

The second Cementing Futures supported project is the Mohammadpur Literacy Centre, run by members of SI Dhaka, to which 30 girls from the local slums attend daily. This project started originally in June 2013 as a three year project and, following successful completion of the first phase, it continues (following a pause during the Covid pandemic).

We always need sponsors for the children and/or people willing to raise funds on our behalf.  £10 per month will educate a child and provide them with a daily nutritional snack.

These projects link to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 4 (quality education), 5 (gender equality) and 10 (reducing inequality).
