The purpose of the STEAM Challenge (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) is to encourage girls to overcome gender-based barriers by selecting STEAM-based subject choices and subsequently careers.<\/span><\/h4>\n

We challenge Year 8 and 9 girls to design, research and build a product which would create a sustainable solution to help people in the poorest parts of the world. This group will also extend our work by working with junior schools to raise awareness of science among younger girls. (Formerly our STEM Challenge, founded in 2013)<\/span><\/h4>\n

SI Bournemouth was pleased to resume it’s STEAM challenge this year. \u00a0Twenty three girls in Years 8\u00a0 and 9 representing six schools attended the finals held in the Fusion Building, Bournemouth University<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although nervous the girls were excited to show their work to a panel of judges. They were given a tour of the University prior to the announcement of the winners. Parents and friends were able to see the University and the STEAM projects too.<\/p>\n

Dr Saskia McGrath, South West Water<\/a>, a judge and supporter of the STEAM Challenge for several years was keynote speaker. \u00a0Soroptimist visitors Ann Garvie and Dr Margaret Elmsley, also spoke with encouragement and assured the audience that they continue to be inspired by the range and diversity of the projects each year.<\/p>\n

We are forever grateful for ongoing support from Bournemouth University, South West Water, Ellis Jones and our enthusiastic team of judges.<\/p>\n
