{"id":5388,"date":"2020-12-12T18:57:14","date_gmt":"2020-12-12T17:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/?p=5388"},"modified":"2020-12-12T19:17:49","modified_gmt":"2020-12-12T18:17:49","slug":"speaker-meeting-10th-december-2020-road-to-equality-andrew-wallis-obe-ceo-of-unseen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/2020\/12\/12\/speaker-meeting-10th-december-2020-road-to-equality-andrew-wallis-obe-ceo-of-unseen\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaker Meeting 10th December 2020: Road to Equality, Andrew Wallis OBE, CEO of Unseen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Our 16 Days of Activism (see programme Action Report \u201cOrange the World\u201d) culminated with a talk delivered via Zoom by Andrew Wallis.\u00a0 In addition to members of SI Bristol, the talk was \u2018attended\u2019 by members from our Friendship Link clubs: SI Chester, SI Halifax and by SI Weston super Mare.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2016\/11\/Unseen-logo_70.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-636\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2016\/11\/Unseen-logo_70.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><strong>Unseen has been operating in Bristol and beyond for over 10 years and we have been involved with them in many different ways since 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman trafficking is a crime. It does not always involve international transportation. Trafficking in the UK includes commercial, sexual and bonded labour. Trafficked people have little choice in what happens to them and often suffer abuse due to violence and threats made against them or their families. In effect, they become commodities owned by traffickers, used for profit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew is an inspirational speaker and he started by telling us about the work of Unseen and how they are working towards a world without slavery.\u00a0 Their work involves supporting survivors and potential victims of slavery (men, women and children).\u00a0 They also provide training, raise awareness and work with Governments to influence change. They have a UK wide Modern Slavery Helpline in use 24 hours a day 365 days a year and they also take international calls.\u00a0 The staff are fully trained and offers a translation service too. They also refer to the police and other agencies and are deeply involved in campaigning.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers of cases recorded are huge. \u00a0In 2019 there were 5,144 modern slavery offences recorded in England and Wales and of those 230 were local cases<\/p>\n<p>In the UK survivors and potential victims of slavery are involved with criminal exploitation for begging and drugs, domestic servitude and sexual exploitation.
