{"id":5748,"date":"2021-10-17T16:10:02","date_gmt":"2021-10-17T15:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/?p=5748"},"modified":"2021-10-17T16:10:02","modified_gmt":"2021-10-17T15:10:02","slug":"speaker-meeting-11th-october-2021-bristol-blue-plaques-and-the-women-they-honour-lori-streich-the-bristol-civic-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/2021\/10\/17\/speaker-meeting-11th-october-2021-bristol-blue-plaques-and-the-women-they-honour-lori-streich-the-bristol-civic-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaker Meeting 11th October 2021: Bristol Blue Plaques and the Women they Honour &#8211; Lori Streich \u2013 The Bristol Civic Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/07\/Blue-Plaque-closeup-1-Civic-Society-3-July-2021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5653\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/07\/Blue-Plaque-closeup-1-Civic-Society-3-July-2021-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/07\/Blue-Plaque-closeup-1-Civic-Society-3-July-2021-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/07\/Blue-Plaque-closeup-1-Civic-Society-3-July-2021-853x1024.jpg 853w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/07\/Blue-Plaque-closeup-1-Civic-Society-3-July-2021.jpg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lori started by telling us that the Bristol Blue Plaque scheme was originally run by Bristol City Council but is now organised by the Bristol Civic Society.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The request for a plaque is put forward and the Society then researches the person to ensure that they are connected to the building and that their achievements warrant a plaque.\u00a0 Sometimes they are people who have a low profile but have done amazing things.\u00a0 The plaque is funded by the nominee and has to be approved through planning applications.<\/p>\n<p>There are plaques to individual women and sometimes more than one on the same plaque, Lori spoke of some women that we are familiar with and many more.\u00a0 She showed us the plaque dedicated in July 2021, as part of our Centenary celebrations, to our very own Addison-Phillips.\u00a0 She said \u201ca plaque to Miss Addison-Phillips was unveiled at Clifton High School where she was Headmistress (1908-1933).\u00a0 It was supported by Soroptimist International of Bristol, the Rotary Club of Bristol and Clifton High School.\u00a0 She was one of the founders and the first President of the then Bristol Venture Club which was the first \u201cwomen\u2019s category club\u201d in the world.\u00a0 It later merged with Soroptimist International.<\/p>\n<p>There was another interesting plaque celebrating Emily and Elizabeth Sturge.\u00a0 Emily<a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/10\/Blue-Plaque-at-Redmails-High-School-October-2021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5774\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/10\/Blue-Plaque-at-Redmails-High-School-October-2021-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/10\/Blue-Plaque-at-Redmails-High-School-October-2021-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/bristol\/files\/2021\/10\/Blue-Plaque-at-Redmails-High-School-October-2021.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 289px) 100vw, 289px\" \/><\/a> was a founding member of the Bristol Suffrage Society and Elizabeth worked to improve housing in Bristol.
