Soroptimist International of Burton-on-Trent

Welcome!

Here are some of the things we have been involved in during 2017-18

A total of £1,578 was raised for GOOD CAUSES.

The programme action carried out by Soroptimist International of Burton upon Trent is primarily aimed at helping women and children locally, nationally and internationally.

Our notable achievements during the year were:

The Gladys Rowland Student Award Bursary Scheme – in 2017 we awarded 5 bursaries of £100 each to young women from local schools to help them with their university costs. These awards are directed towards female students studying engineering, maths and science-based subjects at university.

We made our final annual sponsorship bursary of £210 to a young women for her secondary education in Wellingara, the Gambia, enabling her to meet her college fees.

Through one of our members we give moral and advisory support Maimuna, from Wellingara in the Gambia, in her fight for asylum in this country and her stand against FGM (female genital mutilation).  This year (2018) we are making a grant of £50 to a Women’s Empowerment Forum that Maimuna and her supporters have set up in the Gambia.

We raised £270 from a major Plant Sale at the home of one of our members for the International Soroptimists “Women’s Garden project” in Mehru, Kenya – this event has been repeated in 2018/19.

We again raised £200 from our annual November Table Top Sale in Burton Place for the local branch of the YMCA and their work in  providing refuge and sustenance to the homeless and needy.  The fund-raising event benefits all the people in Burton as they can buy items useful to them at very low prices, the money raised was donated to the local YMCA, and surplus stock was donated to the local British Heart Foundation charity shop

In January 2018, we again held a Recycling Event in the Octagon Shopping Centre in Burton, helped by publicity in the Burton Mail and on Radio Derby.

We collected Mobile Phones for Water Aid to support their work bringing clean water to people in underdeveloped countries (a total of £106 was raised in this way, Printer Cartridges for the Red Cross, Spectacles for Vision Aid Overseas, Knitting Wool for Knitting for Peace, Bras for Breast Cancer charities , and Ties and belts for the Purple Community Fund.

A donation of £45 was made in lieu of Christmas cards for the International Soroptimists Presidents’ Appeal; and £50 was sent to the Red Cross Grenfell Tower Disaster Fund.

We donated £466 to the Burton Sexual Abuse and Rape Advice Centre, and two Soroptimists continue in their service as voluntary Trustees of that charity.  SARAC is a charity supporting people age 13 and over who have been affected by rape, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation and domestic abuse: it is a charity close to the heart of Burton Soroptimists which we helped set up over 21 years ago

A new charity supported was the Purple Community Fund which makes jewellery out of rec-cycled ring pulls on cans and similar items – we raised £134 from the sale of some of their jewellery and bags and 2 events held during the year.

We entered teams in one of the monthly charity quizzes held at the Constitutional Club in High Street and with our efforts raised some £133 which will go towards the work of the local branch of MIND in Burton upon Trent, providing support to people with mental health difficulties.

Apart from the events we arrange in the public arena – table top sales, recycling events, bucket collections – we raise much of our money through social events – pot luck suppers, a Happy Box at our monthly meetings, Christmas mince pie and coffee mornings and other gatherings.  Through these, as Soroptimists, we promote friendship and fun!
